A few months ago, I wrote that you could use your American Express Membership Rewards for Airbnb gift cards.  And now through March 31, 2015, you’ll get a 25% bonus.

With the 25% Bonus You’ll Get a $125 Airbnb Gift Card for 10,000 AMEX Membership Rewards Points

But is this a good deal?

How to Get the 25% Bonus on Airbnb Gift Cards

You can usually redeem 10,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points for a $100 Airbnb gift card.  But according to One Mile at at Time, if you redeem your points by March 31, 2015, you’ll get a $125 Airbnb gift card.

To get the 25% bonus, just log into your AMEX Membership Rewards account.

Then Select the Gift Cards From the Top Menu
Then Select the Gift Cards From the Top Menu

And select Airbnb from the drop down menu.

Is This a Good Deal?

Link:   Save $25 on Your 1st Stay With Airbnb

With this deal you’ll get a $313 Airbnb gift card for 25,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points.  That’s a value of 1.25 cents per point ($313 gift card / 25,000 points).

If you’re new to Airbnb you might do better by saving $50 on your 1st stay with my referral link (but you can NOT combine this with the gift card deal).

I prefer to transfer my AMEX Membership Rewards points to 1 of their travel partners for Big Travel!

AMEX has these airline partners

American Express Membership Rewards Airline Transfer Partners
AeroMexicoAir CanadaAlitalia
ANAAsia MilesBritish Airways
Delta El AlEmirates
EtihadFlying Blue (Air France / KLM)Hawaiian Airlines
IberiaJetBlueSingapore Airlines
Virgin Atlantic

and hotel partners to choose from.

Choice HiltonStarwood

For example, you could transfer your AMEX Membership Rewards points to British Airways.  Then use 25,000 British Airways Avios points (and ~$6 in tax & fees) for a 1-way coach flight from Miami to Dusseldorf, Germany, on Air Berlin.

Note:   Starting October 1, 2015, the new transfer ratio will be 250 AMEX Membership Rewards points : 200 British Airways Avios points.  Or 5:4.

Previously, the ratio was 1:1 with transfers in 1,000 point increments.

A Paid 1-Way Coach Flight From Miami to Dusseldorf Could Cost ~$1,000!

That’s almost $700 more in value ($1,000 1-way award flight to Germany – $313 Airbnb gift card) for your 25,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points!

That said, the 25% bonus may be a good deal for folks who want to avoid the major hotel chains and like to save on stays in unique locations.

Sleep Among the Stars at the ElquiDomos Astronomic Hotel in Chile!

Bottom Line

Through March 31, 2015, you can get a 25% bonus when you redeem your American Express Membership Rewards points for Airbnb gift cards.  Or, if you’ve never used Airbnb, you could save $25 on your 1st stay with my referral link (but you can’t combine these deals)!

I prefer to use my AMEX Membership Rewards points with airline and hotel partners.  That’s because you can get much more value from of your points!

However, the 25% bonus could be a good deal for some.

This deal is a VERY POOR use of AMEX points. I transferred 12.500 miles to Air Canada/Aeroplan and was able to use them to book a one-way ticket from Baltimore to Colorado Springs (on United) which would have otherwise cost me $354.00. Can’t beat that with a stick.

Thanks for sharing

Hi Darius, I appreciate your website and transparency. I just wanted share something that maybe you weren’t aware of. When I receive your newsletter and click on one of the article links once, it takes me further down to where that article appears in the e-mail. But if I double-click on it, (with the intent of being taken to your site for the particular article), it only links me to the photo associated with the article, not the article on your site. Just an fyi :).
