This is a good opportunity to help those devastated by floods, hurricanes, wildfires, and other disasters while earning additional miles for award flights.
A normal American Airlines member (without elite status) will usually earn 5 American Airlines miles per $1 spent on tickets. So earning 10 miles per $1 is double the normal earning rate you would get from flying.
This is not a good deal for buying points. You can purchase American Airlines points for 2.95 cents each or less during promotions. So donating just to get the miles isn’t a good deal (since they effectively cost 10 cents a piece via donation). But for those that are otherwise considering helping out a good cause, this is a great perk for doing so. And your donation is tax deductible.
You can submit your donation with a credit card, debit card, or PayPal. However, using a card like the CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Mastercard® will allow you to earn even more American Airlines miles. The donation will appear as a miscellaneous category on your card, but by using your American Airlines card you could earn an additional 1 mile per $1 spent on the donation, bringing the total up to 11 American Airlines miles per $1 donated.
