Emily: One of my best friends lives in Arlington, Virginia, so I don’t see her very often. We met in college and have been friends ever since. The first (and last) time we took a vacation together was to Barcelona, Spain in 2007.
I thought it would be super fun to celebrate my 30th birthday with her in the Dominican Republic. So we planned a trip to 3 locations, including Santo Domingo, Bayahibe, and Bavaro (near Punta Cana) over the course of one week.

Sofitel Nicolas de Ovando
We tried the breakfast at the hotel since it was included for free.
The hotel had a nice spread including hot and cold foods. There was an omelet station, pancakes…
French toast, sausage and bacon…
Dominican food including yucca and plantains…
cold cuts and cheese…
bread, pastries, yogurt…
and lots of bread.
Kristen: There was a mix of Mediterranean, American and Dominican foods were present, from which I tried and loved a cold plate of the mixed olives, figs, and prunes, with cheese and smoked salmon.
Meanwhile salty herbed potatoes rounded out my warm plate with a yucca and maize based mash with sautéed onions, and a variety of vegetables smothered in a delicious buttery glaze!
During breakfast we enjoyed the classical guitarist adjacent to our covered patio table that played a variety of adaptations including a favorite, “Killing Me Softly.”
One evening, Kristen and I joined Hardy and went to Adrian Tropical for delicious Dominican food.
Hardy had recommended Adrian Tropical and it has good reviews on TripAdvisor so Kristen and I were looking forward to eating there.
We had sancocho, a beef stew, mofongo with yucca, mofongo with cheese, fried chicken with French fries, soup, pina strawberry smoothie, and a mango smoothie. We had hot chocolate for dessert. Everything was delicious, and it was my favorite meal in the Dominican Republic!
Kristen: We ordered food at a famous local chain called Adrian Tropical. The food was typical Dominican and included the likes of Sancocho, a thin stew of pork, beef and chicken, and Mofongo de platano and queso, as well as a Mofongo of Yucca and pork.
We each had a tropical drink, plus Emily had a cup of hot chocolate to finish her meal.
On another evening, we went to El Segafredo and had crepes for dinner. I had a ham and cheese crepe and Kristen had a chicken, tomato, and gouda crepe. The ambience and people watching was very nice. We enjoyed sitting in the main street and watching other families eating, children playing, and couples walking by.
Kristen: After a meager appetite at lunch an early dinner was called for, which landed us at the Segafredo only steps away from our hotel.
I opted for the chicken and gouda crepe with tomatoes and while my taste buds were not overwhelmed, I was pleasantly satisfied. The street side dining offered excellent seats for people watching.
About an hour into our historical walk, we stopped at the recommended Esquisiteces Virginia for batidos (milkshakes).
They had a large snack menu.
The Peace Corps volunteers recommended the batidos.
The restaurant was very warm and inviting.
I ordered zapote and Kristen ordered granadillo.
We still aren’t exactly sure what the fruit was, but both drinks were good!
After our historic walk in Santo Domingo’s Zona Colonial, we went to a tapas restaurant, Pate Palo, in Plaza Espana, a popular plaza, for dinner.
Dinner was expensive, by far the most expensive we had in Santo Domingo.
Kristen: Emily had the mixed plate, a mixture of cured Ham ‘Iberico’, a cheese supposedly Manchego (of which she had her doubts)…
…and slices of French loaf with a creamy tomato based spread…
We also ordered patata brava with the characteristic spicy tomato sauce for dipping.
I ordered the eggplant with arugula on French bread that came plated with artistic dollops of a chipotle cream sauce to supplement. The eggplant was roasted to perfection, lightly salted, and melted in my mouth.
The restaurant managed to satiate us quite well after a day of roaming the colonial city.
