Daraius:  We’ve got a great team at Million Mile Secrets helping with posts.  But I miss writing as much as I did in the old days!  So here I am writing about stuff that I really care about (and which isn’t all miles-and-points related).

Cultivate the habit of being grateful for every good thing that comes to you, and to give thanks continuously.  And because all things have contributed to your advancement, you should include all things in your gratitude. – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Daraius Diary What I Do Before Bed
Whether at a Hotel or in My Own Bed, I Can Find Calmness & Contentedness

Before going to bed, I write down 10 things for which I’m grateful.  And because today is Thanksgiving, I want to share it with y’all!

1.    Our Readers

I’m grateful to every one of y’all who reads the blog, leaves comments, sends me email, connects on social media, and chats with me at conferences!  Connecting with you is what makes this worthwhile to me.  I particularly love reading your Success Stories and reliving your excitement at traveling!

I LOVE what I do.  And yet I have to pinch myself in bed to remind myself that this also pays the bills!

2.   Our Team

It isn’t just Emily and me.

I’m grateful to have a wonderful team at Million Mile Secrets who keep things going.  What’s wonderful about them?  Well, they’re hard-working, intelligent, have integrity, are flexible, kind, and genuinely care about getting you the best deal.

Thank them if you like what you see on the blog.  If you don’t like what you see, I’m responsible for that.

3.   Mom & Dad & Sisters

I am grateful for the love, support, care, and understanding which you’ve never stopped showering on me.

I’ve Always Liked Going on My Own. And My Family Has Watched Out for Me at Every Turn!

For always being there for me (even when I didn’t want it!)

For letting me meander and do what I wanted to do.

For encouraging my precociousness.

And for supporting my independence when I was young and wanted to roam the streets of Bombay by myself or go camping or read up on investing and taxes!

4.   Emily

I’m very touched and thankful that Emily & I care and love each other even though we’re no longer married.  There were many times, when it seemed that disconnecting would be the easiest way to not feel sad, disappointed and angry.  I’m particularly grateful that I was able to get over my anger and resentment and maintain our connection.

I’m Grateful for Every Smile, Silly Moment, and Free Sunglasses!

I am always inspired by her kindness and desire to nurture and take care of everyone around her.

Oh, and she makes me laugh too!

5.   Friends

I’m grateful for all my friends.  I’ve known some of you since I was 4 years old, and some only recently.  I’m especially grateful for how we can re-connect after months or years, and it’s as if we were just meeting yesterday.

And your patience & acceptance when it takes me months to reply to your texts, emails, or phone calls.

6.   Nature

I’m grateful to have such inspiration just outside my window – which helps me re-focus my attention away from the trivial.

I Feel Peaceful When I am Grateful for Earth’s Beauty

I love seeing the trees blowing in the wind.  The clouds.  The sun.  The snow. The blades of green grass.  Always present for me to enjoy.

7.   Abundance

Somewhere along the way, I realized that I’ve got everything I’ve ever wanted in life.

I don’t have to worry about a place to stay, eating food, and have lots of love in my life!  Oh, and I also achieved my childhood dream of having more chocolate than I can eat. 🙂

8.   Gratitude

Yeah, I know this sounds weird.  But I’m grateful that I learned that being grateful and thankful leads to lots of peace.

I find this ~5 minute video by Brother David Seindl-Rast to beautifully explain how easy it is to be grateful.

In my experience, being thankful for what I have (as opposed to pining for what I don’t have), makes me feel more at peace.  It’s as if I’m free from the tyranny of self-absorption.  I feel joyful as I write this and when I remember everything that’s come my way.

9.   Meditation

I’m grateful for having discovered meditation.  I find it makes me more aware of what truly matters – love, kindness, and compassion.

Everything Is Impermanent. And Who am I?

I have greater awareness that there must be more to life than chasing after pleasure or running away from things which scare me.  And that practicing balance and equanimity while meditating, helps me be balanced in real life.

Meditating also helps me realize that I don’t “experience suffering,” as much as I “suffer my experience.”  And that I can choose not to.

Special shout out to Nanda for his emails of inspiration and support!

10.   Food

Y’all may think that travel is my first love.  But, I’ve been holding out on ya!

My Longest Love Affair

I’m grateful for all the tasty, delicious food which I’ve eaten.  I find that food makes me feel happy, content & joyful.  I get connection, love, community, play, and creativity from food.

Bottom Line

I don’t see why I should take only today to be grateful for all the wonderful things in my life.

Thank you for reading and I wish you & your family lots of happiness, love, and good memories!

Oh, and if you’re a bit anxious about spending lots of time with the family…

After a good dinner one can forgive anybody, even one’s own relations. – Oscar Wilde

Thank you for sharing! What beautiful maturity you have come to!

Million Mile Secrets

It seemed appropriate to share it on Thanksgiving. Thanks for your kind words.

Thanks for sharing this.

Million Mile Secrets

Thanks for reading!

c’mon. What you do before bed is count the money from Bankrate and plot your strategy for picking up UT coeds. Little honesty here would help, D.

Million Mile Secrets

That’s a losing trade to me. 😉

Meditation is the best thing I have discovered as well, just spend 3 days at Vivekanand Ashram, Michigan in silence.

I trust you enjoyed the stillness and peace. Is that part of the Chicago Vedanta Foundation?
