Daraius: One of my favorite treats is attending the Berkshire Hathaway annual meeting (affectionately called “ Woodstock for Capitalists”) in Omaha, Nebraska. I went to my 1st meeting in 2007 with my good friend Mike, and I was hooked! This year I attended the meeting with my friends Stefan, who writes Rapid Travel Chai, and Mike.

Restaurants in Omaha
I love eating ethnic food when I travel and explore new places. Omaha didn’t disappoint!
Here are my reviews of the restaurants we visited during our trip.
International Café
I chatted with our Uber driver, who was from Sudan, and got a recommendation to International Café, an Ethiopian restaurant.
When asking for recommendations, I ask for places where He or She eats, NOT places which they suggest to others.

I love talking with Uber drivers and learning their inspiring story (many of them are immigrants). And they usually know the best place in town for cheap and delicious meals!

As we walked in, everyone turned to look at us, since we weren’t the, umm, usual clientele of the restaurant. I guess it’s not a hot spot for finance and miles & points geeks! 😉

We ordered a bit of everything and a cold mango drink which was very sweet and tasted of fresh, ripe mangoes!

The restroom had an unusual sign in it. But was more evidence that the restaurant was all about good food!

Bohemian Café
Stefan suggested eating at Bohemian Café, which was recommended on Road Food.
Road Food is a site that suggests restaurants on major highways and in cities for folks taking road trips. The places you’ll find on Road Food are typically casual, hole-in-the-wall restaurants with terrific food!

The restaurant had a quirky personality.

They don’t accept checks, so bring a credit card or cash.

The dumpling soup was delicious!

And the goulash was rich and hearty!

We saw plum dumplings on the menu for dessert and couldn’t resist them! We placed our order for the dumplings along with our other food, because it takes 30 minutes to make them.

And boy were they worth the wait! It was served with cream and the soft juicy plum complemented the chewy dumpling.

Sunday Lunch at Dario’s Brasserie
We decided to have brunch together before leaving Omaha on Sunday. The folks on Chowhound suggested Dario’s Brasserie, so that’s where we headed!
We ordered the fromage du jour as an appetizer, which was more like a grilled cheese sandwich instead of pieces of cheese and bread.
I also had the Meurette, which had mushrooms, red wine, bacon, and eggs!

I had a fantastic time and it was fun catching up with Stefan and Mike!

Heartland of America Park
After brunch on Sunday, we walked around the Heartland of America Park. Part of the park is on the headquarters of the food company, Con Agra, but the walking path is open to the public.
We walked past the fountain spouting water high above the city skyline.

We came across what we thought were ducks feasting on 1 of their departed brethren.

We walked along the path, and noticed green hillsides perfect for picnicking and hanging out!

Bottom Line
Omaha, Nebraska, may not sound like an exciting place to visit. But it has a wonderful blend of Midwestern friendliness, hospitality, ethnic food, and relaxing places to explore!
And there are a few more restaurants I’d like to try when I return next year!
