I have an upcoming 3 day Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) Cash & Point reservation at The Westin Bayshore in Vancouver, Canada.
In case you’re wondering, Cash & Points is the amazing SPG option which allows you to book a room in a Starwoods hotel for fewer points, but with a cash co-pay. For example, you could redeem 10,000 Starpoints for The Westin Bayshore in Vancouver or you could use Cash & Points for only 4,000 Starpoints + $60 per night. Often times, Cash & Points provides the better value.
But, like an idiot, I accidentally cancelled that reservation while playing around on the SPG website. I immediately tried booking the same room on-line, but the hotel did not have ANY Cash & Point availability for months!
I called the SPG Gold Preferred Guest phone desk, but they were unable to reinstate my reservation. They could only offer me the room at the regular rate of 10,000 Starpoints which wasn’t a good value for me.
I even hung-up and called the Gold Preferred Guest desk back 4 times, but each time the phone rep would give me the same spiel about there being no Cash & Point availability during my stay.
Before giving up, I emailed the reservation department at The Westin Bayshore in Vancouver and explained the situation. Within a few hours the representative had re-instated my reservation!
I was very impressed and am eagerly looking forward to my stay this July!
Bottom Line: It pays to be politely persistent and if the regular reservation agents can’t help you, then it doesn’t hurt to bring your case to the property directly. The property is going to actually benefit from your stay and will be more likely to accommodate your request.
