You Can Fly to Ireland With Aer Lingus Avios Points!

Million Mile Secret reader Derek asked:

I currently have the Chase British Airways Visa Signature Card.  And even though I’m not based in Europe, its sign-up bonus was of great value to me!

I’m interested in the new Chase Aer Lingus card.  I know you can transfer Avios points between your British Airways and Iberia Plus accounts.  But I’m not that familiar with Aer Lingus.

Can you transfer Aer Lingus Avios points between an Aer Lingus account and a British Airways account?

Thanks for the question Derek!

In short, yes you can!  You can transfer Aer Lingus Avios to British Airways (or Iberia!), but the account information has to match.

The information for the British Airways Visa and Chase Aer Lingus Card has been collected independently by Million Mile Secrets.  The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

How to Transfer Avios Points Between Aer Lingus and British Airways Accounts

It takes a few steps to transfer your Avios points between accounts.  But it’s worth the extra effort!  Because transferring Avios points between airlines gives you more options for redeeming your rewards.  And it can save you thousands of points!

I’ll walk you through the process step-by-step.

Step 1 – Sign-up for an Aer Lingus Rewards Account

First, sign-up for an Aer Lingus AerClub account if you don’t already have one.  Simply go to the Aer Lingus website and click “Sign Up for a New Account.”

Sign-up for an Aer Lingus Rewards Account to Get Started!

Just remember, you must be very careful when entering in your profile information!

Your name, address, date of birth, and e-mail address must match your British Airways account profile EXACTLY to be able to transfer points!  So check your British Airways profile first before signing up for an Aer Lingus account.

You’ll Be Asked to Enter Your Personal Information. Then Click the “Continue” Button

After you enter in your personal information, you will be prompted to set up a username and password.

Click the “Create your Account” to finish.  And Aer Lingus will send you a confirmation e-mail where you can confirm your account!

Adding a Special Character to Your Password Will Save a Step!

Note:  Aer Lingus does NOT require you to add a special character to your password.  However, you will save a step later on by adding a special character now.  If you don’t, you will need to change it in the next step.

Registering for an Account is a Piece of Cake!

Step 2 – Gain Access to the Avios Travel Rewards Website

You can search for paid flights on the Aer Lingus website.  But you can NOT transfer Avios points between accounts on AerLingus.com.

Instead, you must go to the Avios Travel Rewards Program website.  Here, you’ll be able to use the “Combine My Points” tool.  This will allow you to transfer your Aer Lingus Avios points from your Aer Lingus account to British Airways  – and Iberia too!

Use Your Aer Lingus Username and Password to Log Into the Avios Travel Rewards Website to Combine Points!

First, log into the Avios website.

The US version of the Avios website can get glitchy.  If you get an error message, you can try logging into the UK version of the site.

Log-in using your Aer Lingus username and password.  This will register you for the Avios Travel Rewards Program!

It’s OKAY If You Get This Message the First Time You Try Logging In.

If you’re initially prompted to reset your password – that’s OK.  The above message will appear if you did not have a special character in your Aer Lingus password.

Just add a special character (!@%$?=&) to your new password, and you should be good to go!  Your new password will work on the Aer Lingus website as well as the Avios website.

Note:  The Avios website is a great way to earn additional Avios points!  You can use their shopping portal to earn Avios points at popular stores like Target and Walmart.

Step 3 – Combine Your Avios Points and Select a Transfer Partner!

Now that you’ve logged into the Avios website, you can transfer and combine Avios points!  Click on “My Account” to get started.

Then, click on “Combine my Avios” to begin the transfer process.

Click on “Combine my Avios” to Begin the Process.

You will now see the option to select a points program on the right side of the page.  If you hover over it, you will get a drop down menu.  Then you can select British Airways!

Click “Select Program” and Choose a Frequent Flyer Program.

Note:  If you have a household account with British Airways, you will need to contact them directly.  That’s because transferring points online is NOT an option.

Step 4 – Make Sure That Your Airline Profiles Match Up!

Now enter your British Airways ID and password.  Just be sure that your British Airways profile matches your Aer Lingus profile exactly.  If you’re not sure, then log into British Airways and check.

Check That Your Account Profiles Match Exactly Before You Log-in!

Your name, address, e-mail, and date of birth all need to match.  In the past, your postal address didn’t have to match.  But the Avios site has stepped-up its security, and now it does!

After entering your information, click ”Log In & Continue.”

Step 5 – Transfer Your Points Between Accounts

Select which accounts you’d like to transfer points between.  Then, enter the number of Avios points that you wish to transfer.

You can transfer any amount of points.  There is no limit!

Choose the Direction You Would Like to Transfer Your Avios Points!

Note:  If you change your mind or make a mistake it’s OK.  You can reverse your transfer at any time!

Just keep in mind the expiration date of your Avios points.  Aer Lingus and British Airways Avios points will expire after 36 months of inactivity with their loyalty programs.  And transferring points using the “Combine my Avios” tool does NOT reset the expiration date!

Once you click “Review My Transfer” you can make sure that everything is correct.  Then just click the “Combine My Avios” button.

Now You Can Review and Complete Your Transfer!

And your transfer is complete!

Transferring Aer Lingus and Iberia points can be done with the same process.  Just click on “Iberia Plus” when selecting the program instead of British Airways.

Just Select “Iberia Plus” to Begin Your Points Transfer!

Then, enter your Iberia Plus Number and PIN to begin transferring points!

Log-in With Your Iberia Plus Number and PIN

Note:  There is a 90-day rule that is unique to the Iberia Plus program.  You must have an active Iberia Plus account open for at least 90 days before you can transfer any Avios points to or from an Iberia Plus account.

Here’s a link that tells you all you need to know about transferring Avios points to Iberia!

Bottom Line

British Airways, Iberia, and Aer Lingus all use Avios points for their frequent flyer programs.  Making it possible to transfer Avios points between all 3 airlines!

It’s worth knowing how to transfer points between your accounts.  Because each airline has a different set of partners and offers its own unique perks.  So we put together a step-by-step guide showing you how!

Just remember, it’s important that your name, address, date of birth, and e-mail are the same on ALL of your Avios frequent flyer accounts.  And don’t forget that you will NOT be able to transfer Avios points to Iberia unless you have an active Iberia Plus account that has been open for at least 90 days.

Thanks again for the question, Derek!
