Through April 30, 2017, you’ll get up to 30% off when you purchase (or gift!) Starwood points. The more points you purchase, the higher the discount.
Here’s how it works:
- Save 10% when you buy 5,000 to 9,500 Starwood points
- Save 15% when you buy 10,000 to 14,500 Starwood points
- Save 20% when you buy 15,000 to 19,500 Starwood points
- Save 30% when you buy 20,000 to 30,000 Starwood points
You can usually buy Starwood points for 3.5 cents each. With this deal, if you buy at least 20,000 Starwood points to get the 30% discount, you’ll pay 2.45 cents per point.
You can buy Starwood points in increments of 500 points. And purchase up to 30,000 Starwood points per account, per calendar year. But remember, purchased points do NOT count towards elite status.
Is This a Good Deal?
This could definitely be worth it for some!
1. High-End Starwood, Marriott, or Ritz-Carlton Stay
For example, you can convert the Starwood points to Marriott or Ritz-Carlton points at a 1:3 ratio. So if you buy 30,000 Starwood points for $735 (the discounted price) you’ll have 90,000 Marriott or Ritz-Carlton points (30,000 Starwood points X 3).
That’s more than enough Marriott points for a stay at a Tier 5 Ritz-Carlton hotel like The Ritz-Carlton New York, Central Park (70,000 Ritz-Carlton points per night). This hotel can regularly cost $1,000+ per night!
As always, do the math to see what makes sense.
2. Get Closer to the Southwest Companion Pass
You can even combine the purchased points with your existing Starwood or Marriott points and book a Marriott Hotel + Air Package. With enough points, you can earn the Southwest Companion Pass this way! But don’t forget, you only have through March 31, 2017, to earn the Companion Pass with this method.
3. Transfer Points to Airlines
You could purchase Starwood points to transfer to your frequent flyer account.
For example, with the 30% savings, you’ll pay $490 for 20,000 Starwood points. Plus, you can get a 5,000 mile bonus when transferring all the points to a Starwood airline partner.
25,000 miles (20,000 + 5,000) is enough for a round-trip coach ticket within the US on airlines like American Airlines and Delta. If $490 is LESS than the cash price you’d pay for a ticket, this deal would make sense!
