Redeeming Spark and Venture miles is an easy way to erase airfare and hotel charges.  But if you’re savvy with miles & points, you might already have other rewards to use for these types of travel purchases.

To redeem your Capital One Spark or Venture miles for travel, just use your card to pay for your travel purchase.  And once it’s posted to your account, you can “erase” the cost with miles.  Remember, you must redeem the miles within 90 days of your purchase.

Officially, Capital One considers these purchases as travel:

  • Airlines
  • Hotels
  • Rail lines
  • Car rental agencies
  • Limousine services
  • Bus lines
  • Cruise lines
  • Taxi cabs
  • Travel agents
  • Timeshares

But it’s possible to redeem miles for ANY purchase that codes as travel.  This means you have a lot more options than what’s on the above list.

Here are a few examples of purchases you might not realize code as travel!

1.   Costco Travel Packages

I know lots of Million Mile Secrets readers love to use Costco Travel to book paid travel.

Besides saving money, booking vacation packages, cruises, or rental cars through Costco Travel usually gets you extra perks.  For example, you can get a resort credit or room upgrade, which are potentially not available when you book through online travel agencies.

And for folks with Capital One Spark or Venture miles, the best part is you can redeem them to offset your Costco Travel purchase!

2.   New York City Sightseeing

There are plenty of free things to do in New York City.  But there are some experiences that are worth paying for.  If you’re traveling to New York City on a budget, you can use Capital One Spark or Venture miles to offset these purchases:

3.   Visit the Top of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai

Million Mile Secrets team member Keith and his wife were so excited to visit the Burj Khalifa during their honeymoon.  This is the world’s tallest building.  To get to the 147th floor observation deck to take panoramic pictures of Dubai, you’ll pay ~$38 per person.

But Capital One Spark and Venture cardholders can use miles to offset this purchase!

4.   New Orleans Walking Tours & Excursions

There are lots of fun walking tours in New Orleans, which range from food tasting tours to Voodoo haunted tours.  And using the Capital One Spark or Venture card to pay for these tours means you’ll be able to redeem miles later on to erase the purchase.  A free tasting tour sounds good to me! 😉

And if you venture outside of New Orleans, you can take a fun airboat tour to see alligators!  This should also code as a travel purchase, so you can use Spark or Venture miles to offset the purchase.

5.   Airbnb Experiences

You can use Spark or Venture miles to cover the cost of an Airbnb stay.  Or you could redeem miles to offset the cost of an Airbnb experience.

Depending on which city you’re visiting, you can book Airbnb experiences like:

  • Photography lessons
  • Hiking and rock climbing tours
  • Comedy shows
  • Cooking lessons
  • Yoga retreats
  • Meditation

Million Mile Secrets

We’ve written about this in the full reviews of Capital One cards. Some folks don’t mind the temporary credit score impact resulting from the hard pulls if it earns them a valuable sign-up bonus. That said, it depends on your card strategy and if you’ve already earned sign-up bonuses with cards from other banks, like Chase.

Here are links to our reviews of the the Capital One Venture and Capital One Spark Miles cards:

I discovered that Capitol One codes UPS shipping charges as “other travel.” Which means that I have used Spark travel points (and presumably the same would be true for Venture) to cover shipping charges with UPS for my business.

Wow! That’s terrific! Thank you for sharing this data point.

Is it a concern to anyone that Capital One pulls from all 3 credit bureaus? I don’t think that’s being called out anywhere…
