Update: One or more card offers in this post are no longer available. Check our Hot Deals for the latest offers.

There are LOTS of reasons why the limited-time increased offer on the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express might make sense for you.  Especially if you love flexibility in how you use your miles!

Some folks might prefer to effortlessly save $700 off a flight.  And others might splurge and book a comfortable Business Class award seat.

Along with the highest-ever 70,000 Delta mile welcome bonus you’ll earn after meeting minimum spending requirements (that ends April 11, 2018!), the card comes with other great perks too!

70,000 Delta Miles Is Enough for a Ticket (or 2!) to Many Tropical Destinations, Like Grand Cayman, Mexico, and the Bahamas!

I’ll share my full review of the AMEX Delta Platinum card.

Until April 11, 2018, you’ll earn 70,000 Delta miles and 10,000 Medallion® Qualification Miles when you open the AMEX Delta Platinum personal card and spend $3,000 on purchases in the first 3 months of account opening.  Plus a $100 statement credit after making a Delta purchase within 3 months of account opening.

The card also comes with perks including:

  • 1 free checked bag for yourself and up to 8 traveling companions on the same reservation
  • 2 miles per $1 spent with Delta
  • 1 mile per $1 spent on everything else
  • 20% discount on certain Delta in-flight purchases
  • Domestic round-trip companion certificate each year on your card anniversary
  • 10,000 Medallion qualifying miles and 10,000 bonus miles when you spend $25,000+ on purchases in a calendar year.  And an additional 10,000 Medallion qualifying miles and 10,000 bonus miles when you spend $50,000 on purchases in the same time frame
  • Priority boarding
  • Discount on Delta SkyClub lounge passes
  • Pay With Miles (each point worth 1 cent)
  • NO foreign transaction fees
  • $195 annual fee, NOT waived the first year
  • Terms Apply

Remember, with AMEX, you can only earn the welcome bonus ONCE per person, per lifetime on each card.  So it’s best to apply when you can take advantage of a larger than normal bonus.  But because each of the Delta cards is considered a different product, you’re eligible for 4 separate welcome bonuses!

And AMEX personal cards WILL count toward your Chase “5/24” limit.  Even if you’re only an authorized user on someone else’s account, that will count too!

So if there are Chase card offers you’re interested in, you might want to skip this card.  But the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express is a good option!

Fly With a Friend or Loved One Using the Delta Companion Certificate

A unique perk for AMEX Delta Platinum card is the round-trip coach companion certificate you get each year on your cardmember anniversary.

You can use this certificate to bring a companion on eligible domestic Delta flights for just the cost of taxes and fees.

Here’s more about the restrictions of the certificate and how this benefit can easily offset the card’s $195 annual fee.

What Can You Do With 70,000 Delta Miles?

At a minimum, the welcome bonus on the AMEX Delta Platinum card is worth $700, because you can redeem Delta miles for 1 cent each using Pay with Miles.  But you can get much more value from them if you book award flights on Delta or their partners!

Check out my post on how to use Delta miles for expensive flights.  And this post on using Delta miles to get to Europe!

Here are a few ways you can use the 70,000-mile bonus to get more than $700 worth of travel!

1.   One-Way Business Class Award Flight to Europe

Redeeming your miles for otherwise expensive Business Class tickets can make the limited-time AMEX Delta Platinum card welcome bonus extremely valuable.

For example, you can book a one-way Business Class award seat from Salt Lake City to Paris for 70,000 Delta miles (plus ~$26 in taxes and fees).

You Can Save THOUSANDS Using Your Delta Miles for a One-Way Business Class Flight From the US to Europe

Paying cash for the same ticket would cost ~$8,928!  That’s a LOT of savings!

2.   Round-Trip Coach Ticket to Hawaii

If you’ve been dreaming of a trip to the Aloha State, the AMEX Delta Platinum card could help make that dream a reality!

Delta doesn’t publish an award chart.  But it’s easy to use the flexible calendar tool on to search for award flights.

For example, I found round-trip coach award flights from New York (Newark) to Honolulu for as little as 60,000 Delta miles plus $~11 in taxes & fees.

You Can Fly Round-Trip From New York (Newark) to Honolulu for 60,000 Delta Miles and ~$11 in Taxes and Fees

The cash cost of a flight at peak times is easily $900+.  But to be sure you’re getting the best deal, it’s always a good idea to quickly do some calculations.

Platinum Delta Credit Card From American Express 70000 Point Offer Review
Using Delta Miles to Fly to Hawaii Can Be a Great Deal If the Cash Cost of the Ticket Is High

For example, it wouldn’t be a good idea to redeem 75,000 Delta miles for a seat that’s selling for $700 or less.  Because this means you’re getting less than 1 cent per mile ($700 cash cost of flight / 75,000 miles).  You’d be better off using Pay With Miles to get at least 1 cent per mile in value.

But if a seat is selling for $900 and you can book it for 45,000 Delta miles, that’s a great deal.  Because you’re getting 2 cents per mile in value ($900 cash cost of flight / 45,000 miles)!

3.   Round-Trip Award Tickets to Europe in Coach

Flights to popular European cities can be very expensive when you pay cash.  But round-trip coach flights on Delta start at 60,000 Delta miles!

I found coach flights between Atlanta and Paris for 60,000 Delta miles plus ~$86 in taxes and fees.  And it’s easy to use Delta’s website book award travel.

Platinum Delta Credit Card From American Express 70000 Point Offer Review
You Can Use Delta Miles to Fly Practically Anywhere, Including Paris. And Save $1,000+ on Your Ticket!

This same flight would cost ~$1,243 if you paid cash!  After you subtract the taxes and fees needed for the award flight, you save ~$1,157 on your trip (~$1,243 cash price – $86 taxes and fees).

In this case, your Delta miles are worth ~1.9 cents each (~$1,157 cash price / 60,000 miles).  That’s a far better value than using Pay With Miles.

3.   Flights to TONS of Great Cities Within the US!

If you’re looking to travel domestically, you can use the welcome bonus from the AMEX Delta Platinum card to book award flights to fun cities like New York, San Francisco, Atlanta, and more!

Although Delta no longer publishes an award chart, it’s possible to find cheap one-way coach award flights at the following prices if you’re flexible with your travel dates:

  • 5,500 Delta miles for short-haul flights (i.e. Los Angeles to San Francisco)
  • 10,000 Delta miles for medium-haul flights (i.e. New York to Atlanta)
  • 12,500 Delta miles for long-haul flights (i.e. New York to Los Angeles)

The Welcome Bonus From the AMEX Delta Platinum Card Is Enough to Fly Yourself and a Friend or Loved One to the Big Apple for Free!

That means you can get a round-trip coach flight almost anywhere in the US for 25,000 Delta miles!

With the 70,000-mile welcome bonus, you’d have enough miles for at least 2 round-trip, long-haul coach flights, 7 one-way, medium-haul flights, or 12 one-way, short-haul flights.  And that could save you hundreds (if not thousands!) of dollars!

5 Money Saving AMEX Delta Platinum Card Perks

Besides the valuable bonus, AMEX Delta Platinum cardholders can also take advantage of these money saving perks:

One of my favorite parts about being an AMEX cardholder is getting access to AMEX Offers These targeted deals allow you to get a discount or earn extra points on purchases you might already be planning.  And they’re always changing, which means there are always new opportunities to save money!

Bottom Line

The best public offer I’ve seen on the AMEX Delta Platinum card is available until April 11, 2018.  This limited-time deal is great whether you’re looking to book award flights on Delta or partner airlines, to spots like Hawaii, Europe, or fun cities within the US.  Or if you just want to quickly save $700 off Delta flights.

Besides the valuable welcome bonus, AMEX Delta Platinum cardholders can save money with perks like:

But if you’re looking to apply for Chase card offers, you might want to skip the personal card this time around.  Because it will count toward your Chase “5/24” limit.

Remember, the AMEX Delta cards are considered different card products.  So if you’ve had one, you can still earn the bonus on the others!

This is a great deal. I'll be signing up for it.

I'm considering this card, although I don't fly domestic much. If I can use the points for Delta affiliates, then I can make it work. I'll be sure to use MMS' link to apply.

loved free check bag

love the free checked bag

I love this card - I applied for it last year when Delta ran the promotion. I use it like a debit card to rack up miles, and used the miles I got for my vacation last year (Dominican Republic). The additional perks make it worth the annual fee!
