There’s a lot to like about the Wells Fargo Propel American Express® card: 3X points (worth 3% cash back) in several cool categories, travel and purchase protections, and NO annual fee. Plus, a sign-up bonus of 30,000 bonus points (worth $300 in cash back, travel, gift cards, or other rewards) after completing minimum spending requirements.
For non-bonus categories, you’ll earn 1 point per $1 spent (1% cash back). This card is best for folks who prefer cash back rewards, as opposed to miles or points for award travel.
Or those looking for built-in cell phone insurance! If you like all of the above, the Wells Fargo Propel American Express card is worth it!
So does the Wells Fargo Propel AMEX deserve a spot in your wallet?

With the Wells Fargo Propel AMEX, you’ll earn 30,000 bonus points (worth $300 in cash back, travel, gift cards, or other rewards) after spending $3,000 on purchases within the first 3 months of card opening.
And you’ll earn:
- 3 points per $1 spent on travel purchases (flights, hotels, homestays, and car rentals)
- 3 points per $1 spent on eating out and ordering in
- 3 points per $1 spent on gas stations, rideshares, and transit
- 3 points per $1 spent on eligible streaming services, like Apple Music, Hulu, and Netflix
- 1 point per $1 for all other purchases
How cool is that? For most folks with an active lifestyle, these categories represent the bulk of daily spending.
Because you can earn 3% cash back on most travel, and getting around town (public transport, rideshares, and at gas stations). When it’s time to chill, you’ll also earn 3% cash back on eating out or ordering delivery, and on most streaming music and movie services.
And you’ll get:
- Built-in cell phone insurance when you use the card to pay your monthly cell phone bill
- Purchase & return protection
- Extended warranty
- Lost or damaged luggage reimbursement
- Wells Fargo Propel Amex Offers and presale access
Plus, the card has NO annual fee, so it’s free to keep forever. And really, there’s not much down side here.
I recommend having at least one card without an annual fee to increase the overall age of all your credit accounts – which could boost your credit score down the road.

Should You Apply for the Wells Fargo Propel AMEX?
As appealing as this card is because of no annual fees and a welcome bonus worth $300, it’s not the best option for miles & points beginners.
We recommend scooping up the Chase cards you want first, because they have the strictest rules. And opening this card will count against your Chase 5/24 status. Afterward, you can move on to other banks, including Wells Fargo.
This approach works if you’re ultimately looking to earn rewards for cheap travel. Because miles & points can be extremely valuable when you redeem for award trips. Everyone on the MMS team has had several “trips of a lifetime” thanks to this strategy.
That said, if you prefer earning cash back and prefer easy, predictable rewards, the Wells Fargo Propel AMEX has everything we look for in a card: A strong welcome offer, excellent bonus categories, and useful ongoing benefits.
The only word of caution: Wells Fargo is a conservative bank and usually wants you to have a prior banking relationship with them before opening their credit cards. And while they’ve agreed to be more lenient with this card, you might have a hard time gaining approval if you’ve opened lots of other new cards recently.
But if it’s been a while, and you want to try out this card for everyday spending, definitely submit an application!
The Wells Fargo Propel AMEX is a worthwhile card if you like the:
- Welcome offer worth $300 after meeting minimum spending requirements
- Excellent 3% cash back categories, including dining, streaming services, transportation, and travel
- Ongoing perks, like cell phone insurance and purchase protection
- Annual fee, which is $0
We at MMS tend to prefer cards that earn miles & points for award travel. But if you like to earn cash instead, the Wells Fargo Propel AMEX is a solid card worth opening, using regularly, and keeping for the long haul.
