Our Review of the Chase Ink Business Preferred

When you open the Chase Ink Business Preferred card, you’ll earn 80,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points after you spend $5,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening.  You’ll also get:

  • 3X Chase Ultimate Rewards points for every $1 you spend on travel, shipping purchases, internet, cable and phone services, advertising purchases made with social media sites, and search engines (up to a maximum of $150,000 in combined purchases per account anniversary year)
  • 1X Chase Ultimate Rewards points on all other purchases
  • Up to $600 in cell phone insurance when you pay your cell phone bill with the card
  • 25% bonus when you redeem points through the Chase Ultimate Rewards travel portal
  • Primary auto rental insurance (CDW) when renting for business purposes, plus purchase and extended warranty protection

The card has a $95 annual fee, which is NOT waived the first year.

Team members Keith, Meghan, and Jasmin all have the Ink Business Preferred.  You can read about how Keith has saved a ton of cash with the Ink Business Preferred’s cell phone insurance!

1.   Get (at Least!) $1,000 in Travel Through the Chase Ultimate Rewards Travel Portal

If you redeem for cash back, each Chase Ultimate Rewards point is worth 1 cent.  So the 80,000-point welcome bonus is worth $800 in cash back.  But you can do much better!

After meeting the minimum spending requirements with the Ink Business Preferred, you’ll have at least 85,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points ready to take you just about anywhere!  Each point is worth 1.25 cents when you redeem them through the Chase Ultimate Rewards Travel Portal (unless you also have the Chase Sapphire Reserve, which makes your points worth 1.5 cents each when you combine your points to that card).

That’s ~$1,063 worth of travel!

You can book nearly all flights, hotels, car rentals, and cruises through the Chase Ultimate Rewards Travel Portal.  And it’s super easy!  If you know how to use Expedia or other online travel sites, the process is very similar.

Here’s an example flight from Boston to Los Angeles.  The paid fare is ~$301, but you can pay using 24,064 Chase Ultimate Rewards points instead.

Booking Through the Chase Travel Portal Guarantees at Least 1.25 Cents per Point

Simple.

Booking through the Chase Ultimate Rewards Travel Portal is EASY.  But if you’re feeling adventurous, you can get much more value from the Ink Business Preferred 80,000-point sign-up bonus by transferring your points to travel partners.

2.   Fly 2 People Round-Trip to Lima, Peru on United Airlines

United Airlines has a simple to use award chart.  By selecting your origin region and destination region, you can see how many miles you’d need to travel anywhere United Airlines or their partners fly!

You can fly from the US to Northern South America for only 20,000 United Airlines miles one-way!  So you can take your Ink Business Preferred 80,000-point sign-up bonus and fly yourself and friend round-trip to South America by transferring your points to directly United.

In a sample search for March, I found 2 round-trip tickets from Boston to Lima, Peru for $1,768.  That’s over 2X the value of the sign-up bonus if you had elected for cash-back!

3.   Travel to Ireland 3 Times!

British Airways and Aer Lingus are both Chase Ultimate Rewards transfer partners.  And your 80,000-point  sign-up bonus can get you 3 round-trip tickets from certain US cities to Ireland!

You can book through Aer Lingus or British Airways using Avios points, your choice!

Ireland Is Extremely Affordable When Your Transfer Points to Aer Lingus and British Airways

You can fly from these cities to Dublin for 13,000 Aer Lingus or British Airways Avios points one-way (26,000 points round-trip) in coach during the off-season:

  • Boston
  • Chicago
  • Hartford
  • Newark
  • New York – JFK
  • Philadelphia
  • Washington, DC

For example, I found round-trip tickets between Boston and Dublin on Aer Lingus for ~$627 each.  So you’d save ~$1,881 by transferring your sign-up bonus to Aer Lingus for 3 trips to Ireland!

4.   A 4-Night Stay at a Luxury Hotel in Cancun

Hyatt remains one of the best Chase Ultimate Rewards hotel transfer partners because of its incredible value.

For example, with 80,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points, you could book 4 free nights at the incredible Hyatt Andaz Mayakoba.  It costs 20,000 Hyatt points per night.

For a paid stay in late August, expect to pay at least $390 per night.  So you’d save ~$1,560 if you used your Chase Ink Business Preferred’s sign-up bonus there!  That’s huge savings!

5.   Family Trip to Disney for 4

Southwest is easily one the best family-friendly airlines in the US.  With 2 free checked bags for everyone and no cancellation fees, it’s a favorite of many!  And what’s even better is that its award prices are based on the cash value of the ticket.

You can transfer your Chase Ultimate Rewards points to Southwest at a 1:1 ratio.  So you can turn your Ink Business Preferred 80,000-point sign-up bonus into lots of Southwest flights, especially when they run one of their frequent seat sales.

Fly a Family of 4 to Orlando for an Unforgettable Trip to Disney

You could take a family of 4 from Denver to Orlando using ~75,630 points, leaving a little leftover of that valuable sign-up bonus.  And you’d save ~$1,156 by using your Chase Ultimate Rewards points for this trip!

6.   Up to 10 Short-Haul Tickets in North America

Don’t need to travel very far?  British Airways Avios points might be the answer.

You can fly for as little as 7,500 British Airways Avios points for distances less than 1,151 miles in North America on partners American Airlines and Alaska Airlines.

For example, you could fly to Boston from Philadelphia 10 times one-way, or 5 times round-trip.  On a weekday in November, you could pay ~$149 for a one-way ticket.  So, you could save over $1,490 by transferring the Ink Business Preferred 80,000-point sign-up bonus to British Airways to redeem on short-haul American Airlines flights.

Qualifying for a Chase Small Business Credit Card

This is a small business card, so you’ll need to have a for-profit venture to get it.  And you might qualify for a small business card without realizing it!

If you earn income for performing a service, or selling goods, you could have a small business.  This can include side jobs like selling items on eBay, driving for Lyft, or tutoring.

You do NOT need an EIN (Employer Identification Number) to apply for a small business credit card.  You can apply with just your social security number as a sole proprietor.

And remember that the Chase 5/24 rule applies for all of the credit cards that earn Chase Ultimate Rewards points.  So, if you’ve opened 5+ credit cards from any bank (except certain business cards) within the previous 24 months, you won’t qualify for the Ink Business Preferred.

Bottom Line

The Ink Business Preferred currently has the highest sign-up bonus of ANY Chase Ultimate Rewards card.

When you open the Ink Business Preferred and spend $5,000 on purchases within the first 3 months of account opening, you’ll earn 80,000 bonus Chase Ultimate Rewards points.  That’s worth $800 in cash back, or $1,000 in travel when you book through the Chase Ultimate Rewards Travel Portal with NO blackout dates.  Or you can get potentially thousands of dollars in travel by transferring them to travel partners!

The sign-up bonus alone is enough for a family trip to Disney, 2 round-trip tickets to South America, or even 10 one-way flights in North America!

You can apply for the Ink Business Preferred here.
