Hyatt Points + Cash
Link: Hyatt Points + Cash
You pay half the points of an award stay plus a fixed cash rate with Points + Cash. The cash rate is usually less than the value of the points you are saving. So if you stayed at the Hyatt Place Bush Intercontinental Airport, a Category 1 hotel, on Points + Cash, you would pay 2,500 points + $50 instead of 5,000 points.
The $50 cash rate is less than what it would cost you to buy the 2,500 points you’re saving by paying with Points + Cash. You can look at this as buying Hyatt points for 1.2 cents to 2 cents per point.
The Park Hyatt Milan is a Category 7 hotel and costs 30,000 points per night or 60,000 points for the weekend if you only used Hyatt points.
Or you could pay ~$2,142 in cash for the 2 nights.
But using Hyatt’s new Points & Cash option, you only pay 15,000 Hyatt points + $300 a night or 30,000 Hyatt points + $600 for 2 nights.
Subject to Availability
But Points + Cash rooms, unlike regular award night redemptions, are subject to availability. This means you could redeem for a full award but might not be able to book the same room using a combination of points and cash.
So during summer and holidays Points + Cash rooms might not be available.
You have to call 800-228-3360 (within the US) to book a room using Points + Cash.
Should You Use Points + Cash or Redeem Points?
1. Save Points & Cash
You can pay less points and save cash using Points + Cash redemptions. A 2 night stay at the Park Hyatt Milan using Points + Cash would cost 30,000 Hyatt points + $600 cash.
You save 30,000 points off the full award redemption by using Points + Cash (60,000 Hyatt points for the regular rate – 30,000 Hyatt points for Points + Cash).
And you save $1,542 of the $2,142 cash cost ($2,142 regular rate at the Park Hyatt Milan – $600 Points + Cash cost). You get 2 nights at the Park Hyatt Milan for only 30,000 Hyatt points + $600 cash compared to 60,000 points when redeeming a full award or ~$2,142 if paying cash. So using Points + Cash makes more sense, if you want to save your Hyatt points.
2. Earn Credit Towards Elite MembershipPoints + Cash redemption nights count towards elite membership. So the 2 nights you book at the Park Hyatt Milan would earn 2 nights towards elite status.
And if you have the Hyatt credit card, you get 5 night credits toward Diamond status after spending $20,000 in a calendar. And an additional 5 night credits after spending $40,000 in a calendar year. Of course, most folks won’t be able to spend these amounts, but it could be useful for Big Spenders!
You can earn Diamond status after 25 stays or 50 nights in a year at Hyatt hotels.
Diamond status gives you:
- Free breakfast
- Free Wi-Fi
- 4 suite upgrades a year
- Late check-out (4:00 pm)
You don’t earn elite stay credit when you redeem only points for your award stay. But you do get elite status credit for Points + Cash redemptions. So if you want elite stay credit, you should use Points + Cash.
3. Earn Points
You earn points on the cash portion of a Points + Cash redemption. For the $600 cash portion of your Points + Cash stay at the Park Hyatt Milan, you would earn:
- 3,000 points ($600 x 5 Hyatt points) as a Gold elite member
- 3,450 points ($600 x 5 Hyatt points x .15) as a Platinum elite member
- 3,900 points ($600 x 5 Hyatt Points x .30) as a Diamond elite member
You don’t earn points on full award stays. So booking with a Points + Cash stay, you’ll earn points while you’re redeeming points.
4. Use Diamond Suite Upgrades
You CAN use your Hyatt Diamond suite upgrades with the Points + Cash rate. You can’t use your Hyatt Diamond suite upgrade certificates if you book the room using only points.
Another benefit of using your Diamond suite upgrades is that if the entry-level rooms are not available, you may yet be able to stay in the hotel because suites are still available!
How to Get More Hyatt Points
Here’s how you can earn lots of Hyatt points.1. Hyatt Credit Card
Instead of points, you get 2 free nights at any Hyatt hotel after completing the minimum spending on the Hyatt credit card. You can use the free nights at ANY Hyatt hotel worldwide.
You have to call Hyatt to redeem your free nights. You can book a room if the hotel has standard rooms available. You can check availability before calling Hyatt.
2. Ultimate Rewards Points
Ultimate Rewards points earned from the Chase Freedom card can also be transferred to Hyatt.
Here are step-by-step instructions on transferring points from the Chase Freedom to a card which allows you to transfer them to Hyatt points.
3. Buy Points
You can buy points from Hyatt for 2.4 cents each. But you can only buy up to 40,000 Hyatt points a year. Buying 40,000 points would cost $960 (40,000 points X 2.4 cents per point).
Buying points could be a good idea if you’re short a few points for a redemption or if the hotel costs more than if you bought points.
Because staying 1 night at the Park Hyatt Milan can cost $1,071 a night, it makes sense buying points instead of paying cash. You would pay $720 to buy 30,000 Hyatt points. So you’d save $351 ($1,071 or the regular room rate – $720 cost of buying points) by buying points instead of paying cash for 1 night.
But buying 5,000 points to stay at the Hyatt Place Bush Intercontinental Airport wouldn’t make sense. You would pay $120 to buy 5,000 points. But it only costs ~$81 for 1 night. This means you’d pay $39 more ($120 cost of buying Hyatt points – $81 regular room rate) by buying points than if you paid cash.4. Earn Up to 50,000 Points During Hyatt’s Promotion
You can earn up to 50,000 points in the Hyatt Endless Possibilities promotion between January 15, 2014, through April 30, 2014.
- You get 5,000 points after you stay 5 night.
- After 10 nights, you’ll get an additional 10,000 points. Meaning you’ll have earned 15,000 points.
- You’ll get 15,000 more points after you stay 15 nights. So you’ll have 30,000 points after staying 15 nights.
- When you stay 20 nights, you’ll get an additional 20,000 points. So you get 50,000 points after you stay 20 nights!
If you have a lot of upcoming stays before you want to redeem points at the Park Hyatt Milan, the Endless Possibilities promotion can help you earn extra points.
Points + Cash rates also qualify as night stay credit in the promotion.
Hyatt Points + Cash saves you points & cash, earns elite stay credit, and you earn points while you’re redeeming points.
Using Points + Cash makes a lot of sense if you’re short on points, want to earn elite stay credit, and earn points on award stays.
