Flexible credit card rewards are the best type of miles & points to earn because you aren’t stuck redeeming with a single airline or hotel. But that’s only one advantage to earning points like Citi ThankYou points.
Another huge benefit is that flexible points are generally easier to combine into one account and this can make a huge difference when it comes to redeeming your rewards. Most airlines charge you to transfer miles from one account to another. But with Citi ThankYou points (and other types of transferrable rewards) you can share points between accounts for free.
I’ll explain to you the advantage of sharing your Citi ThankYou points, how to do it, and what you need to watch out for. If you want to learn more tips, and tricks for getting the most out of your credit card rewards, subscribe to our email newsletter.
How to Share Citi ThankYou Points
If you’re going to share Citi ThankYou points, don’t do it unless you have a specific use for them because once they are shared between ThankYou accounts they will expire in 90 days and there is nothing you can do to extend the expiration date.
Here are the important terms for Citi ThankYou point sharing:
- You can transfer up to 100,000 Citi ThankYou points per calendar year from your account
- You can receive up to 100,000 Citi ThankYou points from transfers per calendar year
- Transferred Citi ThankYou points expire after 90 days
- Citi ThankYou points transferred to you cannot then be transfer to another account
You can only share Citi ThankYou points that you earn from a credit card. So you could share the bonus points you earn from the sign-up bonus and spending with cards like the:
- Citi Premier® Card
- Citi Prestige Card
- Citi Rewards+® Card
- Citi Rewards+℠ Student Card
The information for the Citi Prestige, Citi Rewards Student cards has been collected independently by Million Mile Secrets. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.
If you earn Citi ThankYou points as a bonus from a Citi checking account you can’t share those or transfer them to Citi’s travel partners.
Sharing Citi ThankYou points is useful because each Citi ThankYou points credit card has different perks. For example, if you have the Citi Prestige card or Citi Premier Card you can transfer your points to Citi’s travel partners. And with the Citi Premier card, your points are worth 25% more for travel booked through the Citi ThankYou portal, like cruises, hotels, rental cars, and airfare.
Sharing points also makes sense if you need to combine points into a single airline loyalty account. Let’s say you have 20,000 Citi ThankYou points and your spouse has 15,000 points. You want to convert these to Singapore Airlines miles so you can book a round-trip flight on United Airlines to Hawaii, but the miles all need to be in the same Singapore Airlines account first.
You can’t transfer Citi ThankYou points directly from your ThankYou account into an airline loyalty account that is in someone else’s name. But you can get around that problem by sharing the points first, then making the transfer to Singapore Airlines.
Here are the steps to sharing Citi ThankYou points.
Step 1. Log-In to Your Account & Select “Points Sharing”
First, you’ll need to log-in to your ThankYou account. Do this by clicking the “Sign On” button and entering your username and password.
Then, under the “More Ways to Redeem” tab, select “Points Sharing.”
You’ll need to verify your points sharing request by getting a code texted (or called) to the phone associated with your account. After that you’ll get to the screen you see in step 2.
Step 2. Begin Sharing
On this screen click the “Begin Sharing” button at the bottom. You might need to scroll down a bit to see it.
Step 3. Select How Many Points You Want to Share & Who You Want to Share Them With
Next, you’ll choose how many points you want to share. You can use the slider bar at the top to adjust the number of points you’ll transfer. But it is much easier to just type in the number in the “THANKYOU POINTS TO SHARE” box.
Then enter the first name, last name, ThankYou account type (bank or credit card), and ThankYou account number of the personal you want to share points with.
Step 4. Review the Terms & Click “Continue”
Then you’ll need to agree to the terms and conditions.
After that, scroll to the bottom of your screen and click “Continue” to finish the process.
After that last screen you’ll be able to review the details of your transfer. Be sure the number of points and information for the person you are transferring to are correct before finalizing the transaction.
That’s it! This is only something you’ll need to do to transfer points to another person. If you happen to have more than one Citi ThankYou card, your ThankYou points are automatically combined into the same account. I earned ThankYou points from a checking account bonus and they were combined into the same ThankYou account that is linked to my Citi Premier Card, even though my credit card online account has a separate username & password from my bank account.
