INSIDER SECRET: If you have a Chase credit card (like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card) that earns Ultimate Rewards points and enables transfers to travel partners, you can transfer the points you earn with your Chase Freedom card to partner airlines and hotels.

Chase Freedom cardholders have a new set of bonus categories this quarter. If you plan ahead, you can make the most of your bonus, earning up to 7,500 Chase Ultimate Rewards points.

When pooled with points from annual-fee Chase cards like the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card, those bonus points would be enough to earn you a free stay at a Category 1 Hyatt hotel with points to spare. Or you can transfer them to other terrific partners like Southwest for nearly free flights.

The new categories are available now through Sept. 30, 2019. After you activate the bonus (by Sept. 14, 2019), you will earn 5% cash back (5x Chase Ultimate Rewards points per $1 spent) at gas stations and streaming services up to $1,500 in combined spending.

Here are a couple of ideas to help you earn the maximum bonus this quarter.

Earn Chase Ultimate Rewards Points at Gas Stations and Streaming Services

Apply Here: Chase Freedom

Through Sept. 30, 2019, you’ll earn 5% cash back (5 Chase Ultimate Rewards points per $1) on your first $1,500 in combined spending at gas stations and on streaming services.

At 5x points per $1, that means you can earn a total of 7,500 Chase Ultimate Rewards bonus points ($75) this quarter. Remember to activate your Chase Freedom card by Sept. 14, 2019 to get this bonus. The bonus is even retroactive back to the start of the quarter (July 1, 2019) for any purchases you make between then and your activation date.

Normally, the points you earn with the Chase Freedom card are worth 1 cent each as cash back and for gift cards or travel. But if you also have select Chase Ultimate Rewards points-earning cards — the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit CardChase Sapphire Preferred® Card or Chase Sapphire Reserve® — you can transfer these bonus points from the Chase Freedom card to the other card and redeem them for:

  • One free night at a Category 1 Hyatt hotel (generally worth much more than $75)
  • Part of the cost of a higher-category Hyatt hotel
  • A short one-way flight on Southwest
  • Part of an award-flight ticket on United Airlines or one of their Star Alliance partners
  • A short-haul award flight with British Airways and their partners, such as American Airlines

1. Pay for all Your Streaming Services

The following streaming services will earn this quarter’s 5% bonus:

This is a small list, but it covers most of the major services. Most people don’t have more than $25-$50 a month in streaming service subscription fees, so this will only get you a little of the full $1,500 that comes with the 5x bonus.

2. Gas Stations Sell More Than Just Gas

You could increase your spending at gas stations this quarter by using them for their convenience store offerings. These purchases still qualify, so they can be a great way to make quick trips for snacks or drinks. Need some more chips for the BBQ you’re doing? Grab them from a nearby gas station the next time you’re filling up.

There are 100+ gas stations that qualify for this quarter’s bonus, so you’re likely to have several options wherever you are. You can see the full list of eligible gas stations here.

Folks who purchase their gas primarily at wholesale clubs like Sam’s Club or Costco can shift their habits to filling up at gas stations this quarter instead. These warehouse-club gas stations or gas stations operated by grocery chains like Kroger will usually not qualify for bonus points. These are the types of “gas stations” that explicitly won’t earn bonus points this quarter:

  • Airline fuel companies
  • Car repair shops
  • Convenience stores where gas is not sold
  • Grocery stores
  • Dairies/farm stores
  • Home heating companies
  • Oil and propane distributors
  • Marinas
  • Superstores
  • Warehouse stores
  • Discount stores
  • Truck stops

3. Plan a Summer Road Trip

Because gas stations are a bonus category this quarter and it’s also summertime, it’s the perfect formula to justify a road trip. Save your collection of airline miles for flights this winter and take advantage of summer with a cross-country tour. Depending on how far you are traveling, one road trip can make up a significant portion of your bonus-points limit from gas stations alone.

One note when road-tripping to get bonus points this quarter: Avoid truck stops for filling up. Chase has excluded truck stops from the gas station bonus category. Many of the large gas station superstores off the side of the freeway are actually truck stops and may not qualify for bonus points. One notable exception is Love’s Travel Centers which are fairly common off the freeway nationwide and will earn you bonus points.

Save or print out the list of qualifying gas stations from Chase to use as a cheat sheet while you drive.

Bottom Line

You can earn up to 7,500 bonus Chase Ultimate Rewards points ($75) until Sept. 30, 2019 with your Chase Freedom card at gas stations and streaming services. To earn these bonuses you will need to activate your card before Sept. 14, 2019. As long as you activate your card by that date, all qualifying purchases from July 1, 2019, will earn the 5x Chase Ultimate Rewards points bonus.

For many years, it was easy to hit the $1500 spend during “gas” quarters because my local Kroger gas stations sold Kroger store gift cards. Which could then be used on gas or anything sold in the grocery store. As of 9/16/2019, Kroger gas stations no longer sell Kroger gift cards. Nor will they add money to an existing gift card. Dammit.

My Sam’s Club gas station purchases are coding as gas and receiving 5%, as they always have.

Good to know, thanks for the datapoint!

As long as my gas station still allows GC purchases with a cc I should be set

Which gas station is this? Can’t find any in Portland Oregon that sell gift cards and accept a credit card to purchase.

This quarter’s bonuses are the worst in recent memory. A royal bummer.

I could actually see a lot of people earning lots of bonus points buying gas, so I’m thinking this quarter should be good for most.

Sure, everyone buys gas. Some more than others. But unless you have a gas guzzler, you just won’t get that many points. I definitely don’t spend $500/month in gas, so won’t come close to maxing out. Gas stations where I live don’t take credit cards for gift cards either. Yes lots of people will get *some* use but wish this were offered with say grocery stores instead of online streaming services (?!?!?!).

Ah, I hear ya. I guess I just know a lot of people who have long commutes to work lol!

And actually, I myself used to spend $400-$500 in gas a month because of a long commute.
