I’ve written about how you can earn as much as $2,000+ in cash back by using Apple Pay to make in-store purchases with your Discover it® Cash Back or up to 23 miles per $1 spent with your Discover it® Miles card.
This deal is HOT! And I have great news that will make it even better!
I’ve done some experimenting and found you can earn the cash back bonus at many more stores than those listed on the Apple Pay site! Plus, folks who purchased gift cards before they were excluded in the terms, may receive a 1-time cash back credit from Discover!
I’ll show you how to find all the stores near you that will earn the bonus!

When you shop in-store at certain retailers and pay with your Discover it Cash Back you’ll earn 10% cash back using Apple Pay. Or use your Discover it Miles with Apple Pay to earn 10 miles per $1 spent. This deal is good on up to $10,000 in spending through December 31, 2015.
Plus, if you’re a new cardholder (or you’ve previously registered), the cash back or miles you earn will be MATCHED at the end of your 1st 12 billing cycles.
This adds up to Big Savings!
- 22% cash back on regular purchases with the Discover it Cash Back card (1% cash back + 10% bonus = 11%, matched after 12 billing cycles)
- 23 miles per $1 spent on regular purchases with the Discover it Miles card (1.5X miles + 10X miles bonus = 11.5X miles, matched after 12 billing cycles)
- 30% cash back on up to $1,500 in spending per quarter in bonus categories with the Discover it Cash Back card (5% cash back + 10% bonus = 15%, matched after 12 billing cycles)
Here’s a look at which devices work in-store with Apple Pay:
Did You Purchase Gift Cards?
Initially ALL purchases at participating stores counted towards the bonus. Then Discover announced gift cards are excluded.
Some folks who purchased gift cards with Apple Pay BEFORE the new terms were announced on September 18, 2015, are receiving a 1-time credit for the 10% cash back or 10X miles bonus! To be clear, Discover says gift card purchases are NOT eligible going forward.
Where Can You Use Apple Pay?

Here is Apple’s list of major retailers that accept Apple Pay. But the number of eligible stores goes way beyond this!
Apple Pay works with NFC (Near Field Communication) technology. And folks on Reddit suggested that any place with a contactless terminal, should also accept Apple Pay.
My friend decided to test this out and found a small local deli in her area with a contactless terminal. The gentleman at the register didn’t know anything about it, but she asked nicely if she could give it a try.
And it worked! She was able to buy lunch with her Discover it Cash Back and Apple Pay! She earned the 10% cash back bonus from Discover! And her cash back will be matched at the end of the year for a total of 22% cash back (1% cash back + 10% bonus = 11%, matched after 12 billing cycles).
You can find out which stores around you have NFC terminals with:
If you’re searching on the MasterCard Nearby app, make sure only the “Contactless” category is selected.
In Austin, the list includes many places where it’s hard to find ways to save:

- Auto Repair Shops
- Gas stations
- Local markets

And if you’re a new cardholder or previously registered, Discover will MATCH your cash back or miles at the end of your 1st 12 billing cycles. So you can earn $2,000+ in cash back or 23X miles!
Gift cards are now excluded from this deal. But Discover still giving 10% cash back to some folks who purchased gift cards before the terms and conditions were changed.
And the great news is, many more places accept Apple Pay than what’s listed on their site. This includes many gas stations, local restaurants, and small shops!
