Last month, I wrote the The Business Platinum Card from American Express OPEN was doing away with its 20% rebate when you book flights through Pay With Points.
That’s because they’re replacing it with a larger 30% rebate. This new benefit begins July 1, 2015.
But the 30% rebate is different from the current 20% rebate.
What’s The Business Platinum Card from American Express OPEN?
You can earn 40,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points with The Business Platinum Card from American Express OPEN. To get the points, sign-up and spend $5,000 on purchases within the 1st 3 months of opening your account.
Other card benefits include:
- Up to $200 in airline credits per calendar year on select airlines (you have to enroll and select a qualifying airline each year)
- Airport lounge access (Delta, Priority Pass, Airspace, and American Express Centurion Lounges)
- TSA PreCheck OR Global Entry statement credit
- NO foreign transaction fees
- Terms and limitations apply
The $450 annual fee is NOT waived. But remember, you can $200 in airline credits in 2015, and then again in 2016, before the annual fee is due.
And soon you’ll get a new perk with this card.
How the New 30% Pay With Points Rebate Works
Starting July 1, 2015, you’ll get a 30% rebate when you redeem your AMEX Membership Rewards points for flights directly through AMEX.
But you’ll have to choose 1 airline for this benefit. The 20% rebate that ends July 1, 2015, is good with any airline.
The airline you choose will also apply to the $200 statement credit you get with The Business Platinum Card from American Express OPEN.
It’s nice to see the rebate increased. However, this may not be a good change for folks who aren’t tied down to a single airline and want to choose their flight based on price.
Using Pay With Points to book flights is convenient because you don’t have to worry about blackout dates or finding award seats. Plus you’ll earn frequent flyer miles!
That said, I still prefer to use my AMEX Membership Rewards points by transferring to airline and hotel partners!
On July 1, 2015, the 20% rebate you get on Pay with Points flights with The Business Platinum Card from American Express OPEN, will become a 30% rebate.
But you’ll only get the 30% of your points back when you redeem for flights on a single airline (of your choosing). And you will have to use your $200 statement credit with the same airline.
It’s good news that the rebate has increased and this could be useful if you’re loyal to a certain airline.
