You can get a 30% discount up to September 18, 2013 when you transfer Southwest points from one person to another.  This is a targeted offer from Southwest, but you may have received a similar offer.  A 30% discount still means that I pay $7 to transfer 1,000 Southwest points.

Transferring points are almost never worth it unless you are topping off your account for an award.

But it could be worth it if the points counted towards the Southwest Companion Pass.  With a Southwest Companion pass, your companion gets unlimited travel – on both points or cash tickets – for up to 2 years!

So I was curious to see if transfering Southwest points counts towards the Companion Pass.

Do Southwest Point Transfer Count Towards The Companion Pass?

Southwest Companion Pass

The Southwest Companion Pass can save you thousands of dollars on airline tickets by letting your companion fly with you for free (you only pay taxes)!

You have to earn 110,000 Southwest points in a calendar year to earn a Companion Pass.  The easiest way to earn Companion Pass points is to wait for the 50,000 point Southwest credit card offer to come back.

Southwest Point Transfers

Generally transferring points aren’t a good deal because the airlines usually charge a fee to transfer points or miles.  You can book flights for anyone using your miles, so you can avoid transfer fees by just booking award tickets for others using the miles or points in your account.

I transferred 1,000 points to Emily as a test, but it did NOT count towards her Companion Pass point total.

Bottom Line

You can get a 30% discount for transferring Southwest points, but those points don’t count towards the Southwest Companion Pass.

I have 200000 spg points can I transfer them to rapid rewards point to add to my sw point toward companion pass

On my Chase Southwest card, it states that balance transfers will earn me 1 pt per dollar. Will these count towards the companion pass? Thank you for all the help btw! 🙂

@Quentin – Transfers directly from the Chase Ultimate Rewards portal to Southwest will NOT count towards the Companion Pass. If the bonus posts in 2014, it will count towards the Companion Pass in 2014.

@Talisman – No personal experience, but I believe it will count!

Hi. I have 47,000 points in my Chase Sapphire account, which I can transfer to Southwest. I just got a Southwest card, and am timing my 50,000 bonus points for January. Two questions… first, if I transfer the 47k points in January will they count toward the Companion Pass? Also, did I do this correctly with the SW card? I acquired the card in Nov 2013, but will time the Bonus for Jan 2014. Hoping to be 90% toward a companion pass next month? Thank!

Hello Darius,

I have 106,500 SW points earned by 2 credit cards and spending on them. I need to get 3,500 more points to qualify for the Companion pass. Which Hotel points can I transfer to SW to make the 110,000 SW points. I have HH points, Marriott points and SPG points. Which can I use to transfer to get my 3500 points. Thanks for your help.

@Travelfan – You can transfer Marriott points to Southwest and it currently counts towards the Companion Pass.

@brandon The 50k points from the SW card will NOT count toward the A list or A list preferred. Only the companion pass.

@Brandon – Sorry if I wasn’t clear. The points count towards the Companion Pass status, but not towards the A List status.
