Hey, Barclaycard referral offer for US Airways. Is a wife going to be a referral that will count? I don’t see anything against it.
Until January 18, 2015, Barclaycard US Airways cardholders can refer others to the card and receive up to 50,000 bonus miles total (either 5,000 or 10,000 miles, depending upon your targeted offer, per approved application).
But will you get the bonus if you refer your spouse or domestic partner?
Even though the promotion says “Refer Your Friends,” you can refer anyone you’d like! Family, friend, dog … (well, maybe not your dog, unless they have a Social Security number). 🙂
Yes, You Can Refer Your Family (Including Spouse or Domestic Partner)

If you’re a Barclaycard US Airways cardholder, check your email for the referral offer. You’ll get 5,000 or 10,000 miles for every referral, so long as the person you’ve referred applies and is approved by January 18, 2015. And you can earn a maximum of 50,000 miles.
Folks who are referred will receive 50,000 miles after their 1st purchase and payment of the $89 annual fee.
There’s nothing in the fine print that restricts folks from referring family members. According to the terms and conditions:
You must be at least 18 years of age. This offer may not be available if you already have or have had a US Airways Visa or MasterCard credit card. This offer is available only to applicants who are residents of the United States, with the exception of Iowa, Puerto Rico and the US territories, and may not be available if you already have or have had an account with us. If at the time of your application you do not meet the credit or income criteria previously established for this offer, or the income you report is insufficient based on your current obligations, we may be unable to open an account for you.
So as long as Jon’s wife is approved for the card according to Barclaycard’s criteria, he should get the referral bonus. But she may not be approved if she already has the card or has had 1 in the past.
Note: You don’t have to be referred to get the 50,000 mile bonus on the Barclaycard US Airways card. But if you can find someone to refer you, it’s a win-win situation for both folks involved! And this card will be discontinued after the American Airlines and US Airways merge next year. Folks who already have the card will receive the Barclaycard AAdvantage Aviator card, but it won’t be open to new applicants.
What Can You Do With 50,000 Miles?

Your US Airways miles will be converted to American Airlines miles (at a 1:1 ratio) early in 2015. And you can get a lot of travel with 50,000 US Airways miles!
For example, you could get:
- 2 round-trip coach class tickets within North America
- 1 round-trip coach class ticket to Europe (off-peak) with 15,000 miles left over
- 1 round-trip coach class ticket to Hawaii (with 10,000 miles left over)
This is likely the last increased bonus we’ll see on this card, and probably the only opportunity to refer friends and family before it is retired for good.
Bottom Line
Existing Barclaycard US Airways cardholders can refer friends or family for the 50,000 mile increased sign-up bonus until January 18, 2015.
Check your email for offer details. Some folks will get 5,000 miles for every approved referral, while others will earn 10,000 miles. The maximum you can earn in either case is 50,000 miles.
You can refer anyone, including your spouse or domestic partner. There are no restrictions against referring family members.
Thanks for the question, Jon!
