Million Mile Secrets reader Johnna emails:

I noticed that Amazon is listed as one of the spend categories for the Chase Freedom 4th quarter bonus.  Do you know if an Amazon payment would be included in this spend category?

I know as of October 13th they will no longer allow person to person payments but was planning on doing this for October before the deadline.

Wonder if using the Chase Freedom card would get me the 5X bonus points?  It appears that it does show up as Amazon as the merchant but didn’t know if the bank would recognize it as something different.

Johnna is referring to the Chase Freedom 4th quarter category bonus for Amazon purchases.

From October 1, 2014 to December 31, 2014, you’ll earn 5X points or 5% cash back when you use the Chase Freedom card at Amazon, Zappos.com, and select department stores such as as Macy’s and JCPenney.  But you have to activate the bonus, because it doesn’t happen automatically.

But Johnna wants to know if using the Chase Freedom card for Amazon Payments will earn the 5X category bonus.

Note:   Amazon Payments will NO longer allow person-to-person transfers effective October 13, 2014.

Does It Work?

Link:   Chase Freedom FAQ

According to the Chase Freedom FAQ, you’ll earn 5X points or 5% cash back at Amazon on:

All purchases you make through the checkout at Amazon.com, including digital downloads, Amazon.com gift cards, Amazon Fresh orders and Amazon Prime subscriptions are included and items sold by third party merchants through Amazon.com’s marketplace.  5% cash back does not apply to purchases made at Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.de, Amazon.fr, Amazon.co.jp, Amazon.ca, or any other website operated by Amazon.com, its affiliates and subsidiaries.

Amazon Payments is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Amazon, so will NOT qualify for the 5X points or 5% cash back.

Dad, Wait! You Won’t Earn 5X Points With the Chase Freedom Through Amazon Payments!

I checked my Chase account to see how Amazon Payments purchases were posted, and they’re clearly marked “Amazon Payments,” not “Amazon.com.”

The Transaction Description on Chase Credit Cards Is Definitely “Amazon Payments”

It would be nice to get 1 last hurrah out of Amazon Payments and earn 5X points in the process, but unfortunately it will NOT work!

Note:   If Johnna has the Discover It card, this quarter you can get 5% cash back on all online purchases, including Amazon Payments.  That’s worth $50 on a $1,000 (the maximum) transaction!

Bottom Line

You will NOT earn 5X points or 5% cash back by using the Chase Freedom card this quarter for Amazon Payments

Only purchases made directly through Amazon qualify for the Chase Freedom 4th quarter category bonus.

But if you have the Discover It card, it pays 5% cash back this quarter on all online purchases, including Amazon Payments, when you register for your 5% categories.

Thanks for the question, Johnna!

If you put “Office” in the optional details.. It flags a “work related” for Chase Ink Plus account. Too bad it’s no longer as of tomorrow.

This is the most ridiculously long post just to say “no.”

I have the it card, are there other services that do this? I know Google Wallet may work, also Paypal send money feature.

Purchase amazon gift card for future use, could I use it as pmt for other gift cards in the future?

@Seth the 1k max mms is referring to the Amazon payment maximum per cycle, forgot if it monthly or ssomething else.
