Million Mile Secrets reader Johnna emails:
I noticed that Amazon is listed as one of the spend categories for the Chase Freedom 4th quarter bonus. Do you know if an Amazon payment would be included in this spend category?
I know as of October 13th they will no longer allow person to person payments but was planning on doing this for October before the deadline.
Wonder if using the Chase Freedom card would get me the 5X bonus points? It appears that it does show up as Amazon as the merchant but didn’t know if the bank would recognize it as something different.
From October 1, 2014 to December 31, 2014, you’ll earn 5X points or 5% cash back when you use the Chase Freedom card at Amazon, Zappos.com, and select department stores such as as Macy’s and JCPenney. But you have to activate the bonus, because it doesn’t happen automatically.
Note: Amazon Payments will NO longer allow person-to-person transfers effective October 13, 2014.
Does It Work?

All purchases you make through the checkout at Amazon.com, including digital downloads, Amazon.com gift cards, Amazon Fresh orders and Amazon Prime subscriptions are included and items sold by third party merchants through Amazon.com’s marketplace. 5% cash back does not apply to purchases made at Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.de, Amazon.fr, Amazon.co.jp, Amazon.ca, or any other website operated by Amazon.com, its affiliates and subsidiaries.
I checked my Chase account to see how Amazon Payments purchases were posted, and they’re clearly marked “Amazon Payments,” not “Amazon.com.”
It would be nice to get 1 last hurrah out of Amazon Payments and earn 5X points in the process, but unfortunately it will NOT work!
Note: If Johnna has the Discover It card, this quarter you can get 5% cash back on all online purchases, including Amazon Payments. That’s worth $50 on a $1,000 (the maximum) transaction!
Thanks for the question, Johnna!
