Through July 2, 2019, there is an increased bonus offer on the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express. With it, you can earn a 60,000 Delta mile bonus after spending $2,000 on purchases within the first three months of account opening. And you’ll earn a $50 statement credit after making a Delta purchase in the same timeframe.
This is a great card to open if you’re looking to stock up on Delta miles quickly. Delta normally has a couple of award sales per week, so there is no shortage of opportunities to put your miles to good use.
Here’s a rundown of all the Amex Delta Gold Card benefits and perks.
Amex Delta Gold Card Benefits and Perks
When you open the Amex Gold Delta SkyMiles card, you can earn 60,000 Delta miles after spending $2,000 on purchases within the first three months of account opening. And you’ll earn a $50 statement credit after making a Delta purchase within the same timeframe. This offer ends on July 2, 2019.
This card does have a $95 annual fee, but it’s waived for the first year (see rates & fees).
Just remember, Amex limits you to earning the welcome bonus on a specific card to once per lifetime. So if you’ve earned the bonus on the Amex Delta Gold card in the past, you won’t be eligible to earn it again. That said, it’s considered a different product than the other Amex Delta cards.
Aside from the welcome bonus, here are the other benefits and perks you get with the card.
1. First Checked Bag Free for up to 9 People
With the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express, the primary cardholder and up to eight others traveling on the same reservation will enjoy one free checked bag each. This only applies to Delta flights and to standard baggage fees. So if you have an over-sized bag, that fee isn’t waived.
The nice thing about this perk is that it’s tied to your Delta SkyMiles account. So as long as your Delta frequent flyer number is attached to your flight reservation you’ll get your first checked bag free.
2. Earn Delta Miles on Every Purchase
With the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express, you’ll earn:
- 2 miles per dollar spent with Delta
- 1 mile per dollar spent on everything else
- Terms apply
So you’ll earn Delta miles with every dollar you spend!
3. Priority Boarding
If you want to ensure you can get overhead bin space near your seat, you’ll be happy to know that Amex Gold Delta SkyMiles cardholders receive complimentary priority boarding for themselves and up to eight additional people flying on the same itinerary.
This perk is especially helpful if you’ve booked a cheaper Basic Economy ticket. To get the benefit, you just need to include your Delta frequent flyer number on your reservation.
4. 20% Inflight Purchase Discount
When you make certain in-flight purchases with your Amex Delta Gold card you’ll receive a 20% discount as a statement credit. The discount applies to specific purchases such as food, beverages (including alcohol), movies and audio headsets.
But other expenses like inflight Wi-Fi won’t qualify for the discount.
5. Free ShopRunner Membership
As an American Express cardholder, you’re eligible for a free ShopRunner membership. This gets you unlimited two-day shipping at a wide selection of stores. Membership normally costs $79 per year.
6. Ability to Pay With Miles for Flights
The Amex Delta Gold card unlocks the ability to use the Pay with Miles feature. This allows you to purchase Delta flights with Delta miles at a rate of 1 cent per mile. So the 60,000-mile bonus you can earn with this card is worth no less than $600 in Delta flights.
While you can generally get more value out of your points if you use them to book award flights, this is a nice option to have. With it, you won’t have to worry about finding the cheapest Delta low-level awards on the dates you want to fly. And if you can find a good fare sale you might be able to use fewer miles with Pay with Miles than if you booked an award ticket.
Just note, this perk only applies to Delta flights, not flights with partner airlines.
7. Earn Delta Elite Status More Easily
To earn Delta elite status you need to earn a certain amount of:
- Medallion® Qualification Dollars (MQDs), and;
- Medallion® Qualification Miles (MQMs) or Medallion® Qualification Segments (MQSs)
Here is what you’ll need to earn to qualify for each tier of Delta elite status:
With the Amex Delta Gold card, you can earn an MQD waiver for Silver, Gold or Platinum status if you spend $25,000 in eligible purchases on the card in the qualification year.
You can even earn an MQD waiver for Diamond status, but you’ll need to spend a whopping $250,000 in eligible purchases in the qualification year.
So if the MQD requirement is the only thing standing between you and Delta elite status, this card can help you get there.
8. Buy Single Visit Delta Lounge Passes
Late last year, Delta stopped selling single visit passes for their Sky Club lounges. But Amex Delta Gold cardholders still have the option to purchase lounge passes for themselves and two guests or their spouse and children under 21 years old.
The day passes cost $29 per person, but if you’ve got a long layover it could be well worth it. In order to be eligible for day passes you’ll need to be traveling on a Delta flight that same day.
9. Access to Amex Offers
Having an American Express card will give you access to special discounts known as Amex Offers. These deals are targeted statement credits or bonus points for all sorts of purchases. I’ve saved with Uber, Lyft, Hulu and several different hotels thanks to Amex Offers.
Team member Meghan has also been able to take advantage of some of these discounts, even turning some of them into a profit!
10. No Foreign Transaction Fees
Going on a vacation outside of the US should be fun. But a 3% foreign transaction fee added onto every single purchase isn’t.
11. Rental Car Insurance
If you pay for your rental car with your Amex Delta Gold card you’ll get secondary rental car insurance. This coverage applies to damage to the rental car, but because it’s secondary, it only kicks in after your other insurances have paid out. It applies to the first 30 days of a vehicle rental.
Personally, I pay for my rental cars with my Chase Sapphire Preferred Card because it comes with primary rental car insurance.
12. Return Protection
If you try to return an item purchased entirely with your Amex Delta Gold card and the merchant won’t take it back, you may be covered by the card’s return protection.
This coverage applies to eligible items purchased within 90 days and may refund you up to $300 per item up to a maximum of $1,000 per calendar year. This perk doesn’t apply to shipping and handling charges or certain items like motorized vehicles, jewelry, computer software and perishable items.
13. Purchase Protection
Anytime an expensive purchase is damaged or stolen it’s heartbreaking. But it’s especially bad when it happens shortly after you’ve bought an item.
But when you buy an eligible item with your Amex Delta Gold card, you’ll get purchase protection for up to 120 days for accidental damage or theft. You can be reimbursed up to the amount you charged to your card or a maximum of $1,000 per occurrence and not more than $50,000 per account per calendar year.
14. Extended Warranty
Concerned that your warranty isn’t long enough? If you purchase an eligible item with your Amex Delta Gold card you can get up to two years added to the original manufacturer’s warranty. This applies to warranties that are five years or less.
This perk will cover you for up to $10,000 per occurrence and $50,000 per account per calendar year.
15. Roadside Assistance Hotline
Stuck on the side of the road in need of help? This card comes with access to a 24-hour Roadside Assistance Hotline. There isn’t a charge to make a call to the hotline, but you will be charged for any help you need. They can help you secure these services:
- Jump starts
- Flat tires (when you’ve got a working spare)
- Delivery of up to two gallons of fuel
- Lockout service when the key is in your vehicle
16. Travel Accident Insurance
If the worst happens while you’re traveling, you could be covered for losses resulting from accidental death or dismemberment. It’s unlikely you’ll ever need to use this, but it’s nice to know it’s available.
To be eligible for this insurance you’ll need to be pay for your entire travel fare (cruise, ticket, etc.) with your Amex Delta Gold card.
Delta miles may not always be the most straightforward to use because Delta doesn’t have an award chart. But they do have frequent award sales, so it’s a good idea to stock up on Delta miles while the bonuses on their cards are high.
The good news is, through July 2, 2019, the Amex Gold Delta SkyMiles card has a 60,000 Delta mile intro bonus after spending $2,000 on purchases within the first three months of account opening. And you’ll earn a $50 statement credit after making a Delta purchase within the same timeframe.
