Read our Amex Business Platinum Card Review
The welcome bonus on the Amex Business Platinum card is substantial. With the current offer, you’ll earn:
- 50,000 Amex Membership Rewards points after you spend $10,000 on purchases in the first 3 months of account opening
- 25,000 Amex Membership Rewards points after you spend an additional $10,000 on qualifying purchases within the same time frame
The card has a $595 annual fee that is NOT waived the first year (see rates & fees).
Once you meet the spending requirement, you’ll have at least 95,000 Amex Membership Rewards points (75,000 points total intro bonus + at least 20,000 points from minimum spending requirements). You could redeem those points for nearly $1,400 worth of airfare when you book through Pay With Points, and potentially much more when you transfer points to Amex transfer partners.
The Amex Business Platinum really shines well beyond the outstanding welcome bonus. It’s the money saving and travel benefits from the card that make it worth keeping. Many of us on the Million Mile Secrets team hang on to this card year after year just for the incredible perks.
1. Access to 1,400+ Airport Lounges
With the Amex Business Platinum, you get access to over 1,200 Priority Pass lounges worldwide after enrollment, including Amex Centurion lounges, Delta Sky Club lounges (when flying on Delta the same day), Escape lounges, and Airspace lounges.
For Centurion Lounges, Sky Club lounges, Escape, and Airspace lounges, just show your Amex Business Platinum card (along with your boarding pass in some lounges) to enter. Priority Pass lounges require a separate enrollment (easy to do online) and card.
Airport lounges are a great place to relax and enjoy complimentary food and drinks before a flight, as well as escape the busy and loud airport terminal. If you’re a frequent traveler, you could save hundreds of dollars avoiding expensive airport meals, cocktails, and Wi-Fi charges. Some Centurion lounges have even more luxurious amenities like complimentary spa services and showers!
2. Up to $200 in Airline Incidental Fee Credits
When you apply for the card, and every January after, you can select a participating airline for your Amex Platinum airline credit and have incidental charges for onboard meals, checked bags, or seat assignments reimbursed to your account up to $200 per year.
This can save you a lot on trips because you won’t have to worry about packing only carry-on luggage or skimping on inflight meals and drinks.
3. Up to $200 in Dell Credits
Each calendar year, you’ll get up to $200 in Dell statement credits on US purchases. You get $100 in credits from January to June and another $100 in credits from July to December.
To qualify for the credit you will need to make the purchases directly with Dell.
4. Hotel Elite Status With Hilton and Marriott
Hilton Gold Status
Amex Business Platinum card members receive complimentary Gold Hilton status after enrollment. Normally, you’d need 20 stays, 40 nights, or 75,000 Hilton base points in a calendar year to earn this level of elite status.
Hilton Gold status is valuable because you’ll get room upgrades (when available), bonus points on stays, and free breakfast, including at upscale brands like Conrad and Waldorf Astoria. If you stay at Hilton hotels frequently, this perk alone can save you hundreds of dollars a year. Team member Jasmin and her kids got a ~$140 breakfast free at the Conrad Tokyo thanks to Hilton Gold status!
Over a couple of stays, the Hilton Gold free breakfast perk alone could off set much of the Amex Business Platinum annual fee.
Marriott Gold Status
Having Gold status with Marriott offers perks like bonus points on paid stays, a welcome gift of points, and possible upgrades when available.
5. Get MORE Travel With a 35% Points Rebate!
Spending more points than you have to is never ideal, and when you have the Amex Business Platinum card, you can conserve your points!
When you use Amex Pay With Points, you get 1 cent per point toward your ticket. But Amex Business Platinum card holders can get a 35% points rebate. You’ll get:
- 35% of your points back for all first class or business class flights booked through the Amex travel portal
- 35% of your points back for all flights, including coach tickets, booked with your selected airline through the Amex travel portal
You can choose from 1 of these 9 airlines to use the Pay With Points perk for coach airfare:
- Alaska Airlines
- American Airlines
- Frontier Airlines
- Hawaiian Airlines
- Spirit Airlines
- United Airlines
Note: You can select an airline when you first get the card and can change it in January every year after.
6. Make Your Stay More Special With Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts or the Amex Hotel Collection
Amex Business Platinum card holders get access to the Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts program. If you book paid nights at upscale hotels, this perk can get you hundreds of dollars worth of extras during your stay!
Lots of our team members make the most of this perk. That’s another reason why they’ve kept the Amex Business Platinum for the long haul.
With the Amex Business Platinum card, you can book rooms at over 1,000 hotels that participate in the program to get perks like:
- 12pm check-in, when available
- Guaranteed 4pm late checkout
- Room upgrades when available
- Free daily breakfast for 2
- Free in-room Wi-Fi when available
- A benefit unique to your hotel, like a $100 dining credit, free meal, or spa service
- 3rd or 4th night free at certain hotels
The Amex Hotel Collection is similar to Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts. When you book through The Hotel Collection with your Amex Business Platinum, you can receive up to $100 in hotel credit upon checkout for eligible purchases you’ve made like dining and spa treatments (not including taxes and fees). You’re also eligible for room upgrades, if available. You’ll get double the Amex Membership Rewards points for booking.
While spending cash on a fancy hotel isn’t cheap, the Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts and the Amex Hotel Collection programs can really take your special stay to the next level! It’s an awesome way to celebrate an anniversary, birthday, or other occasion and treat yourself to a little luxury.
7. Speed Through Airport Security and Customs With NO Extra Cost
Global Entry is great. Not only does it get you through US Customs in no time after returning from an international trip, but also it gets you TSA PreCheck just about every time, which can save you hours of standing in line at the airport.
With the Amex Business Platinum, you’ll get a statement credit every 4 years for the Global Entry or every 4.5 years for the TSA PreCheck application fee ($100 or $85, respectively). It is totally worth it, I promise.
Global Entry is the better deal, because you’ll usually get TSA PreCheck with it anyway. Having Global Entry can be the difference between making it through customs and immigration within ~10 minutes or getting stuck in line for over an hour.
8. Access to Amex Offers
Having an American Express card will give you access to special discounts known as Amex Offers. These deals are targeted statement credits or bonus points for all sorts of purchases. I’ve saved on purchases with Uber, Lyft, Hulu, Apple Pay, and several different hotels thanks to Amex Offers.
The offers are easy to stack because you just add them to your card online and they are automatically applied after you make an eligible purchase. So you can take advantage of them even when you earn rewards or cash back through an online shopping portal.
9. Rental Car Status
With the Amex Business Platinum card you can also enroll to receive Avis Preferred Club, Hertz Gold Plus Rewards, and National Emerald Club Executive, which come with perks like free upgrades, special discounts, and accelerated earning of free rentals.
Lots of Million Mile Secrets readers and team members are big fans of National Emerald Club Executive status because you can pay for a mid-sized rental and pick almost any car you want.
10. Amex International Airline Discounts
This isn’t a very well known perk of the Amex Business Platinum card, but it allows you to book discounted premium economy, business class, and first class flights. Recently it became more useful because you can now book these discounts online.
All of these airlines participate in the program:
Keep in mind that you won’t find a deal for every airline on every route and the amount of the discount will vary widely. Typically, you’ll see much larger discounts for business or first class. But you can still easily save $300+ on a premium economy ticket to Europe. And you can potentially save $1,000s on expensive international first-class tickets.
If you take advantage of this perk just once or twice a year it can easily make the annual fee worth paying.
11. Free Inflight Wi-Fi Passes
I rarely see inflight Wi-Fi on sale for less than $10, so it’s easy for most travelers to get at least $100 a year from this benefit. And it’s likely you’ll save much more because on longer flights Wi-Fi can get pricey.
12. Free Boingo Wi-Fi Membership
Your Amex Business Platinum card comes with a free unlimited Boingo membership, which gets you access to 1,000,000+ Wi-Fi hotspots around the world. Boingo sells a similar unlimited-access plan for $14.99 per month but you’ll get this complimentary with your card.
You’ll need to sign up for the service on this Amex Boingo page.
13. The Amex Concierge
The American Express Platinum Service, also known as the American Express Platinum Concierge, can assist you with just about anything. Their number is 800-525-3355. The concierge can help you with many tasks, including buying tickets, finding restaurants, booking travel reservations, finding a perfect gift, and travel research.
14. Amex Premium Roadside Assistance
Amex Premium Roadside Assistance offers complimentary emergency services up to four times a year. These services include:
- Towing (up to 10 miles)
- Changing a flat tire (when you have a spare tire)
- Jump-starting a battery
- Lockout service (when the key is in the vehicle)
- Delivery of up to 2 gallons of fuel
This service doesn’t cover rental vehicles, taxis, tractors, or large trucks over 10,000 lbs. gross vehicle weight. You’ll also have to pay for any towing over 10 miles or additional services.
15. No Foreign Transaction Fees
This is a handy perk. In the past, I was unexpectedly charged a 3% foreign transaction fee for an overseas online purchase because I wasn’t aware that the fee applied to any transaction in a foreign currency.
16. Private Jet Program
The biggest benefit is that you can purchase a Jet Card (payment used to book your private jet) for as little as $50,000, instead of the normal price of $100,000. So you don’t have to commit nearly as much money.
Your card will also give you a 3% bonus to your Jet Card, and an inflight catering credit up to $250 per trip, plus a credit for transfer services, up to $200 per trip. And you’ll get a 20% discount on full-fare commercial Delta flights.
17. Lowest Hotel Rate Guarantee
If you book a hotel through the Amex Travel Portal, and later find the exact same room with the exact same travel information (dates, number of guests, etc.) for less before taxes and fees, Amex will refund the difference, as long as you submit your claim before your stay, and the price you find is available to the general public online. Note: no AAA, senior citizen, government discounts, etc.
18. Global Dining Collection
The Global Dining Collection gives you access to exclusive events, where you can meet famous chefs, and even get kitchen tours, special menus and free drinks! Just call the Amex Business Platinum Concierge, and they’ll make your reservations.
20. Car Rental Loss and Damage Insurance
If you pay for your rental car with your Amex Business Platinum you’ll get secondary rental car insurance. This coverage applies to theft or damage to the rental car, but because it’s secondary, it only kicks in after your other insurances have paid out. It applies to the first 30 days of a vehicle rental.
Because this coverage is secondary, you might be better off paying for rentals with one of the best credit cards for car rentals instead. Personally, I pay for my rental cars with my Chase Sapphire Preferred Card because it comes with primary rental car insurance.
21. Travel Accident Insurance
When you pay for your entire common carrier fare (i.e. plane, train, ship, or bus) with your Amex Business Platinum you’ll have up to $500,000 in accidental death and dismemberment coverage while traveling. This coverage applies even when you pay for the travel with Amex Membership Rewards points.
There are some exclusions, such as war, self-inflicted injuries, or accidents that happen while you’re committing an illegal act.
22. Extended Warranty Coverage
If you purchase an eligible item with your Amex Business Platinum you can get up to 2 years added to the original manufacturer’s warranty. This applies to warranties that are 5 years or less. If the original warranty is less than 2 years Amex will match it and if it’s between 2-5 years long Amex will add an additional 2 years to the original warranty.
This perk will cover you for up to $10,000 per occurrence and $50,000 per account per calendar year. Shipping and handling costs will not be refunded.
23. Purchase Protection
When you buy an eligible item with your Amex Business Platinum, you’ll get purchase protection for up to 120 days (90 days for New York residents) for accidental damage, theft, or if it’s lost. You can be reimbursed up to the amount you charged to your card or a maximum of $1,000 per occurrence and not more than $50,000 per account per calendar year.
24. Return Protection
If you try to return an eligible item purchased entirely with your Amex Business Platinum and the merchant won’t take it back, you may be covered by the card’s return protection.
This coverage applies to eligible items purchased within 90 days and may refund you up to $300 per item up to a maximum of $1,000 per calendar year. This perk doesn’t apply to shipping and handling charges or certain items like motorized vehicles, jewelry, computer software, and perishable items.
25. Baggage Insurance
When you pay for your entire fare with your Amex Business Platinum your checked bag will be covered for loss or damage for up to $3,000 per person per trip ($10,000 maximum per trip).
This coverage is secondary and doesn’t covered certain valuables such as jewelry, or electronics.
26. Free ShopRunner Membership
As an American Express card holder, you’re eligible for a free ShopRunner membership. This gets you unlimited 2-day shipping at a wide selection of stores. Membership normally costs $79 per year.
The Amex Business Platinum comes with a welcome offer of up to 75,000 Amex Membership Rewards points after meeting tiered minimum spending requirements.
While this is an excellent intro bonus (potentially worth ~$1,400 in airfare when you Pay With Points), the Amex Business Platinum is a keeper card for frequent travelers because it has many additional perks including:
- The best lounge access (including upscale Centurion Lounges)
- Save on bag fees, inflight food and drink, and more with up to $200 in airline incidental fee credit
- Hilton and Marriott elite status (room upgrades, late checkout, and free breakfast at Hilton hotels)
- Stretch your points with a 35% rebate when you Pay With Points for certain flights
- Treat yourself to a luxury experience for less with Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts
- Bypass crowded airport lines with Global Entry or TSA PreCheck
The Amex Business Platinum has a $595 annual fee that is not waived the first year. That’s not a small chunk of change, but if you’re able to make the most of these perks, you’ll usually get far more value from the card than what the annual fee costs.
