Do you know how to check your AMEX account for transfer bonuses?  AMEX often offers bonus miles or points when you transfer your AMEX Membership Rewards points to travel partners.  That means your points can get you more Big Travel!

If you have a travel goal in mind, it’s easy and worthwhile to check if there are any bonuses available.  Because you could pay fewer points for your award flight or hotel stay.

I’ll show you how to check for these limited-time bonuses.  And give you tips about when to make the transfer!

American Express Transfer Bonus

AMEX sometimes offers a bonus when you transfer your AMEX Membership Rewards points to their airline or hotel partners.  It’s worth checking if you can get an American Express transfer bonus because you’ll pay fewer miles or points for your award flight or hotel stay!

Currently, these cards earn AMEX Membership Rewards points:

If you have a particular award in mind, this is an easy way to save your points!

But keep in mind, once you transfer your AMEX Membership Rewards points, you can NOT transfer them back.  And you can NOT transfer your miles or points to AMEX – the transfers only work in one direction.

Note:   American Express charges an excise fee of 0.06 cents per point, up to a maximum of $99, when you transfer points to US airlines.

Should You Transfer Speculatively?

Once you make the transfer, your points become subject to the expiration policy of the airline or hotel program you transfer into.

So, you should be very sure you will put your miles or points to good use before you make the transfer.  Because after it’s done, it’s irreversible.

If you aren’t sure, remember that AMEX Membership Rewards points never expire.  And transfer bonuses come along regularly.  So if you aren’t confident about making a transfer, it’s better to hang on to your points.

That said, most programs have expiration policies of a year or more.  So if it’s a loyalty program you know you use often, you may consider transferring in anticipation of a future award flight or hotel stay.

Million Mile Secrets team member Harlan took advantage of a transfer bonus to British Airways.  Because it’s one of his favorite award programs, he’s sure he’ll sure the points before they expire.  So he took made the transfer to get bonus points.  But as always, do what you’re comfortable with!

Step 3 – Check Your Bonuses

Most transfer bonuses are available to everyone.  But some of them are targeted.  Meaning AMEX selects who gets the bonus miles or points, and who doesn’t.

On this screen, it’s easy to see which ones are available to you.  And when they expire.

For example, last fall there was a 25% bonus when you transferred AMEX Membership Rewards points to Virgin America.  And keep in mind, I’ll always let you know when there’s a good transfer opportunity!

Again, you should only make a transfer when you’re sure you’ll use the miles or points you’ll get.  If you do, you can book an award for fewer points than normal.

But it’s only a good deal if you use it!  So run the numbers before you transfer.  Because once you do, there’s no turning back.

Bottom Line

AMEX Membership Rewards transfer bonuses to partner airlines and hotels can be an excellent deal.  But only if you know you’ll use them!

It’s easy to check which bonuses you’re eligible for by logging into your account.  If you’ll put the bonus to use, you’ll receive a discount on your award flight or hotel stay.  In that case, it’s an excellent way to take part in the deal!

But keep in mind your points become subject to each airline or hotel program’s expiration rules.  And once you transfer, you can NOT transfer the miles or points back to AMEX.  So be certain you’ll use the miles or points before you make the transfer.  Because a deal is only good if you know you’ll use it!

@Cynthia I’m looking for the same thing…

I keep hoping for a bonus offer to transfer to Delta. It’s the only airline that flies out of my mom’s little regional airport in Georgia, VLD. I managed to talk her into signing up for a couple of credit cards for the bonuses and for ongoing spending (Hurray Everyday Preferred!) specifically so we could transfer the Membership Rewards to her Skymiles account. I think AmEx had transfer bonuses in the past for Delta. Any idea when the last one was? Any hope for one in the future?

Waiting for the same lol

I transferred MR points to Delta last week. No bonus. On top of that they charged me excise fee (3K fee on 25K transfer which can also be paid with $) because I was transferring to the domestic airline. I was very disappointed about this fee because I never heard about it before, and didn’t pay such when I was transferring Chase UR points to United.

I hope this helps.

AMEX offered a 25% bonus last fall for transferring SPG points to United. The offer said I’d get the 25% by January 31st, 2017. So far I have not gotten the bonus (Maybe it was United who made the offer)
