8 Cards That Give You a Discount on Award Tickets and Stays
Some folks are content signing-up for a new credit card to get the large sign-up bonus without using it much afterwards. And sometimes they figure the card is not worth the annual fee.
But here are 8 credit cards that are worth paying the annual fee. That’s because they give you a discount on award tickets and hotel stays.
1, 2, 3. Citi American Airlines Cards
You get a 10% rebate (up to 10,000 American Airlines miles per year) on redeemed American Airlines miles with the Citi AAdvantage card.
I value American Airlines miles at 1.8 cents each, so 10,000 American Airlines miles are worth $180, well worth paying the $95 annual fee (on year 2 because the 1st year’s annual fee is waived).
In addition, American Airlines offers discounted award tickets from certain cities when you have a Citi card. So you can save 5,000 or 7,500 American Airlines miles on award tickets IF you have an eligible Citi card.
You get a 5,000 American Airlines mile discount on round-trip award tickets (or 2,500 miles on a 1-way award ticket) IF you have:
- Citi Gold AAdvantage Mastercard or Visa
- Citi AAdvantage American Express
These cards get you a 7,500 American Airlines mile discount on a round-trip award ticket (or 3,750 miles on a 1-way award ticket):
- Citi AAdvantage Mastercard, Visa, or American Express
- Citi Executive card
- CitiBusiness card, Visa, or American Express
- Citi Select AAdvantage American Express
TIP: Read the trick to saving 7,500 American Airlines miles from any city.
Note: Some Citi cards are closed to new applicants.
4. US Bank Club Carlson Card

When you have the Club Carlson card, you get the 2nd night free when you book 2 nights or more on award stays. This means you can book 2 nights, but only pay for 1 night!
By paying the $75 annual fee (not waived for the 1st year), you can save hundreds of dollars and up to 70,000 Club Carlson points (if you book a Category 7 Club Carlson hotel).
5. Chase IHG Card
You get 1 night free at any IHG hotel worldwide when you pay your $49 annual fee (waived the 1st year).
6. Chase Hyatt Card
Link: Hyatt card
Paying the $75 annual fee (waived the 1st year) on the Hyatt card gets you 1 free night in a Category 1 to 4 hotel each year. Some Category 4 Hyatt hotels can cost hundreds of dollars a night so it’s worth paying $75 a year to get 1 night free!
7. Chase Marriott Card
You get 1 free night at any Category 1 to 5 Marriott hotel each year when you pay your $85 annual fee.
8. Barclaycard US Airways Card
Link: US Airways card
Through the rest of 2014, you can save up to 5,000 US Airways miles when you book an award ticket IF you have the US Airways card.
Note: This perk will be discontinued in 2015.
You can save miles and points on award tickets and hotel stays when you have certain credit cards.
The Citi AAdvantage card saves you up to 10,000 American Airlines a year when you redeem American Airlines miles.
For the remainder of 2014, you can save 5,000 US Airways miles on award tickets IF you have the US Airways card.
