Via FlyerTalk, American Express is offering 75,000 Membership Rewards points after spending $10,000 within 4 months on The Business Gold Rewards Card from American Express OPEN if you apply by May 17, 2013.
If you want the offer with 75,000 points please click the link above and NOT the ad in the right column which will get you 50,000 points after spending $5,000 within 3 months.
Just a few days ago, American Express was offering 75,000 points after spending $5,000 (half the spending requirement) (offer expired) within 3 months and many Million Mile Secrets readers got in on that offer.
Normally, 75,000 points would be a great offer, but it isn’t really such a great offer when compared to last week’s offer.
HigH Spending Requirement
You have to spend $10,000 within 4 months to get the 75,000 point sign-on bonus. If you’ve run out of other cards to apply for or have no problem meeting the minimum spending requirement, the 75,000 point offer may make sense to apply for. But most folks have only a limited amount of money which they can spend on credit cards and their sign-up bonuses.
So by spending $10,000 in 4 months on The Business Gold Rewards Card from American Express OPEN, you’re diverting money AWAY from other (potentially more lucrative) credit card sign-up bonuses.
For example, you can get 50,000 points with the Chase Ink Bold or the Chase Ink Plus after spending $5,000 within 3 months. And you could apply for the Chase Sapphire Preferred for 40,000 points after spending $4,000 within 3 months.
So spending $8,000 will get you 90,000 Ultimate Rewards points (50,000 from the Ink Bold/Plus & 40,000 from the Sapphire Preferred) which are more valuable than 75,000 Membership Rewards points.
Or you could get a Citi American Airlines cards for 50,000 miles after spending $2,500 within 4 months. And 50,000 points with the Chase Ink Bold or Chase Ink Plus after spending $5,000 within 3 months. So spending $7,500 earned you 100,000 miles & points – 50,000 American Airlines miles and 50,000 Ultimate Rewards points.
My point is simply that you should go BEYOND the headline sign-up bonus and see if the card makes sense for YOU. Bigger is not necessarily better.
The regular offer for The Business Gold Rewards Card from American Express OPEN is for 50,000 points after spending $5,000 within 3 months (0ffer expired), which may be a better offer for many.
Terms & Conditions
The terms say that you have to apply by May 14, May 15, May 16, or May 17th 2013 using Bonus ID A3ZA (which I’m assuming is already coded in the application link).
The terms also say that the: “Welcome bonus offer not available to applicants who have had this product or any other Business Gold, Green or Platinum Card® account within the last 12 months.”
You should be able to get the bonus if you have have the American Express personal Premier Rewards Gold and the Platinum card since the terms preclude only business cards within the last 12 months.$10,000 may seem like a lot (and it is). But do the math to see if it makes sense for YOU to chase $10,000 spending within 4 months when there are other cards which require less minimum spending.
The $175 annual fee is waived for the 1st year and you earn:
- 3X AMEX Membership Rewards points in 1 of 5 categories (you choose): Airfare purchased directly from airlines, US advertising in select media, US gas stations, US shipping, and US hardware, software, and cloud computing purchases
- 2X points in the remaining 4 categories
- 1X points on other purchases
- NO foreign transaction fees
- Terms and limitations apply
Membership Rewards airline and hotel transfer partners often have transfer bonuses, so you may be able to transfer your points to, say, British Airways and get 35% more points.
American Express seems to be running limited time mega sign-up bonus offers, but with large minimum spending requirements. We’ve seen similar offers before for 1 day only, so it is nice to see this offer run for a little longer. But the minimum spending is high.
75,000 Membership Rewards is a big sign-up bonus. But don’t let that distract you from the equally big $10,000 minimum spending requirement.
This card could make sense for many, but be sure that you can comfortably meet the minimum spending requirement and that it won’t take away from other good sign-up bonuses!
