Whether or not you travel on American Airlines a lot, the Citi®/ AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite™ Mastercard® could be a great addition to your wallet. This card is now offering a higher than usual bonus which is enough for 2 round-trip tickets within the continental US, or even a round-trip ticket to Europe!
The Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite Mastercard is now offering a sign-up bonus of 60,000 American Airlines miles after spending $3,000 on purchases in the first 3 months of account opening.
My husband and I have both gotten this card recently because of the great welcome bonus. Here is why I love the Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select card!
7 Reasons Why The Citi American Airlines Platinum Card Is in My Wallet
1. Great Sign-Up Bonus
Because many cards have rules about how many times you can earn a sign-up bonus, it’s smart to wait to apply until the bonus is higher than normal. That’s where we are now for this card!
When you apply for the Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select card, you can earn 60,000 American Airlines miles after spending $3,000 on purchases in the first 3 months of account opening.
In addition to redeeming these miles for American Airlines award flights, you can also book travel through one of their partners, which include:
- Alaska Airlines
- British Airways
- Cathay Pacific
- Hawaiian Airlines
- Royal Jordanian
- … and more!
Your 60,000 American Airlines miles can take you all over the world. You could get 2 round-trip coach tickets within the continental US with miles to spare, or 1 round-trip coach ticket to Europe. Or how about 2 round-trip coach tickets to Canada, or 1 round-trip to South America in Business Class!
That’s a terrific deal for one credit card! You can see all of the possibilities on American Airlines’ flight award charts.
2. No Annual Fee for the First Year
The Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select has a $99 annual fee, but the great news is that it is waived for the first year. That means you can earn the bonus and try out the card for ~11 months or so before you need to decide whether or not it will stay in your wallet. If you decide the card isn’t right for you, you can cancel before your first annual fee is charged.
3. New Ways To Earn Points
The Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select now offers even more ways to earn miles. You’ll earn:
- 2X American Airlines miles per $1 spent on American Airlines flights
- 2X American Airlines miles per $1 spent at gas stations and restaurants
- 1X American Airlines mile per $1 spent on other purchases
The new expanded bonus categories of gas stations and restaurants make it easy to boost your miles balance through your everyday spending.
4. Free Checked Bags
No one likes paying for checked bags, but with this card in your wallet you don’t have to. On domestic itineraries your first checked bag is FREE! This benefit applies to you plus up to 4 companions on the same reservation. This can be a huge money saver when traveling with family – that’s up to a $125 savings each way for a family of five!
Even if you and your partner only fly American Airlines once a year, you could save $100 on baggage charges on a round-trip flight, which offsets the annual fee!
5. American Airlines Discount
This is a new benefit that rewards you with a $100 flight discount after you spend $20,000 on purchases during your card membership year and renew your card. That works out to about ~$1,667 in spending per month, which is very achievable for many folks.
Now, whether or not it’s worth putting $20,000 spending per year on this card to earn a $100 discount is up to you. If you are a big spender or really just want one credit card, then maybe it is. Personally, I would rather spread that spend out over a few different cards to earn more sign-up bonuses, but you should do what you are comfortable with.
6. Preferred Boarding
With so many people utilizing overhead bins to try to avoid checking bags, preferred boarding is more important than ever. This perk allows you and up to 4 companions on the same reservation to board in Group 5, which is before the general economy boarding. You will have plenty of overhead bin space and will be comfortably in your seat before the masses!
7. 10% Rebate on Redeemed American Airlines Miles
Here’s another great perk offered by the Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite Mastercard. Card holders will receive a 10% rebate on all redeemed American Airlines miles (maximum rebate is 10,000 miles per calendar year). For example, if you have this card and purchase a flight for 50,000 American Airlines miles, you will receive a 5,000 mile rebate!
The Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite Mastercard is now offering an increased sign-up bonus of 60,000 American Airlines miles after spending $3,000 on purchases in the first 3 months of account opening.
This is a great offer even if you don’t fly American Airlines much, because you can use the miles to book on their partner airlines as well. And if you do fly on American Airlines frequently, the ongoing perks offered may make this a permanent card in your wallet. This card also offers:
- Free first checked bag on domestic American Airlines itineraries for yourself and up to 4 travel companions on the same reservation
- Preferred boarding (group 5) for you and up to 4 companions on the same reservation
- 10% rebate on all redeemed miles (up to 10,000 mile rebate per calendar year)
The $99 annual fee is waived for the first year, so you can try this card for ~11 months to see if you like it before having to pay an annual fee. With such great money-saving perks, you might find it’s worthwhile to keep in your wallet long term.
