The IHG® Rewards Club Premier Credit Card comes with a whopper 80,000 IHG point sign-up bonus after meeting minimum spending requirements. And it’s packed with benefits that make it well worth keeping in your wallet year after year.
This card offers a lot of useful perks for folks who like IHG hotels, including an annual anniversary night certificate. But even if you don’t stay at IHG hotels frequently, you never know when you might end up in one, because you can find them just about everywhere!
Here are 6 reasons why we love the Chase IHG Premier card and why it’s a great card to consider!
Why We Like the IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit Card
Apply Here: IHG Rewards Club Premier
1. Huge Sign-Up Bonus, Small Spending Requirement
There’s an $89 annual fee, not waived the first year. But it’s definitely worth paying given the massive sign-up bonus!
You can use 80,000 IHG points for 2 incredible nights at the luxury InterContinental Hotel & Golf Resort in Fiji, which costs 40,000 IHG points per night.
You can get as many as 10 IHG award nights when redeem the bonus with the 4th free night perk, which I will show you next. It is not very often that we see a welcome bonus this valuable from a card with a relatively low $89 annual fee.
2. 4th Award Night Free
Not only does this card offer you lots of IHG points to go out and enjoy, but also it helps stretch those points even further. With the IHG Rewards Club Premier, you’ll get your 4th award night free on any standard room award stay of 4+ nights. This is a discount, not a rebate, so you won’t need to pay the IHG points up front and wait for a refund. So a 4-night standard room award stay will cost the same as a 3-night stay.
With the 80,000-point welcome bonus, you can earn up to 10 free nights when used in conjunction with this perk. Booking an award stay of 4 nights at a 10,000 point per night hotel would cost just 30,000 points. This allows you to book another 4-night stay for another 30,000 points on another occasion, and have 20,000 points left over. This is enough for potentially another 2 nights at a 10,000 IHG point hotel.
3. Anniversary Free Night
Every year you renew the card, you will get a free night certificate. You can redeem it for a night any IHG hotel that costs 40,000 IHG points or less. You have a full year to use it once it’s issued, and you get another one each year that you renew your card.
While this excludes some of the highest-end IHG hotels, most IHG hotels are covered within this limit.
The value of this perk, especially at hotels that cost more points, is usually worth far more than the annual fee. Just this one perk alone can justify you keeping this card every year!
4. Platinum Elite status
The IHG Rewards Club Premier card earns you automatic Platinum Elite status with IHG just for keeping the card open. Having status can make your hotel stays more comfortable and earn you bonus points!
Platinum Elite Status includes:
- Complimentary room upgrades (when available)
- Extended check-out
- Priority check-in
- Complimentary internet
- Welcome amenity
- 50% bonus point earnings on top of base points
- Your IHG points never expire
- … and more
Getting a nice upgrade to a better room is a sweet deal. I personally appreciate having access to late check-out.
5. Global Entry or TSA PreCheck Application Reimbursement
There are many other cards out there that offer Global Entry or TSA PreCheck reimbursement, but most of those cards have high annual fees of $400+. For a card with an $89 annual fee, it is pretty amazing to get this perk, which is worth $100 if you are applying for Global Entry. If you applied for this card and used this reimbursement on Global Entry, you would actually save $11 your first year compared to paying for Global Entry out of pocket ($100 Global Entry cost – $89 annual fee).
You will only get this reimbursement once every 4 years. But your Global Entry or TSA PreCheck is good for 5 years, so it means you will be able to renew with this reimbursement again before it expires.
6. IHG Bonus Points Potential
If you stay at IHG hotels often, the IHG Rewards Club Premier card will allow you to earn IHG points extremely quickly.
The bonus point categories include:
- 10 IHG points per $1 spent at IHG hotels
- 2 IHG points per $1 spent at gas stations, grocery stores, and restaurants
- 1 IHG point per $1 spent on everything else
The real kicker here is the 10 IHG points per $1 spent at IHG hotels. These are points on top of the base points you earn and the 50% bonus points you get for being a Platinum Elite member.
Imagine an affordable $130 per night Holiday Inn Express. This normally would earn you 1,300 IHG points (base points). But if you use the IHG Rewards Club Premier card to book your stay you would earn an additional 1,300 IHG points ($130 x 10 points per $1) for using your card, and another additional 650 bonus points (1,300 base points X 50% bonus) for being a Platinum Elite member.
This means your 1,300 IHG point earnings turns into 3,250 IHG points (1,300 base points + 1,300 card bonus + 650 elite status bonus). That is 2.5X more points!
Also, if you ever need to top up on points, you get 20% off points purchased with the Chase IHG Rewards Premier.
But that’s not the only reason we like the card! You’ll also get:
- 4th award night free on award stays of 4+ consecutive nights (usually worth much more than the $89 annual fee)
- Free anniversary night each cardholder anniversary at hotels costing 40,000 IHG points or less
- Automatic Platinum Elite status (upgrades when available, bonus points, late check-out)
- Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application reimbursement (worth up to $100)
- Terrific IHG bonus points earning at IHG hotels and a 20% discount on purchased points
Considering the number of perks the IHG Rewards Club Premier card gives you for such a modest annual fee, this card is a keeper!
