The best use of Starwood points is at mid-range hotels, or hotels located in places that are usually expensive. Although some folks prefer to transfer their Starwood points to partner airlines!
And here’s how to use your Starwood points for award stays.
The sign-up bonus for the AMEX Starwood card (personal and small business) is usually 25,000 Starwood points after after meeting minimum spending requirements.
But I speculated the 30,000 Starwood point sign-up bonus would return this summer. That’s a big deal because with 5,000 extra Starwood points you can get:
- 2 weekend nights at a Category 1 hotel
- 1 night at a Category 2 hotel
- 1 night at a Category 4 hotel when you add $75 using Cash & Points (This includes hotels like the The Westin Grand Vancouver and Walt Disney World Swan!)
30,000 Starwood points is more than enough to get started with award stays at Starwood hotels! Or treat yourself to a luxury night at a top-tier hotel!
5 Starwood Hotels in the US That Make Great Award Stays
Note: The prices in these examples are based on travel in October 2015.
I haven’t stayed at all these hotels myself, but they are all very tempting! If there are any you would add, let me know in the comments!
1. The Canyon Suites at The Phoenician, Scottsdale
When you stay at The Canyon Suites at The Phoenician, you get your own personal Canyon Ambassador to help you explore a long list of activities like hiking, tennis, golf, wine tasting, art viewing, or spa treatments.
There’s also the Funician Kids Club for the little ones! So you can bring the whole family!
A Category 6 hotel, a night in the Canyon Room at The Phoenician costs $539, or 20,000 Starwood points.
This hotel would make a perfect fall getaway!
2. The Equinox, Vermont
A Category 5 hotel, The Equinox is located in southwestern Vermont and has fun outdoor activities year-round.
The hotel has a spa, golf range, tennis court, and fitness room. And you’re driving distance to hiking in the mountains, fishing, and world-renowned skiing. So there is something to do no matter what time of year you visit!
A 2-night stay costs ~$1,800, or 24,000 Starwood points. You’ll get an amazing value for your points at this hotel!
3. The St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort, Miami
If you want to be near the ocean, consider The St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort in Miami, a Category 7 hotel.
Located on Collins Avenue, you’ll be steps from Bal Harbour Beach. You can swim in the pool, dine at the restaurant, or enjoy the ocean view from your room.
A night in a deluxe ocean view room costs $709 or 30,000 Starwood points.
Guests rave about this hotel and love the beach location!
4. The Westin Riverfront Resort & Spa At Beaver Creek Mountain, Colorado
A Category 5 hotel, The Westin Riverfront Resort & Spa At Beaver Creek Mountain is located near skiing, golf, and outdoor activities in the mountains of Colorado.
The location is perfect for hiking, skiing, leaf-peeping, or simply relaxing!
You can stay here for 2 nights in October for $372, or 24,000 Starwood points.
If you like to be outdoors, this hotel is ideal for a vacation any time of year!
5. The St. Regis New York
If you’re looking for shopping, theater, museums, and culture, treat yourself to a stay at The St. Regis New York.
A Category 7 hotel, a standard room costs ~$1,000 a night or 30,000 Starwood points.
So you save a lot of money when you use your Starwood points here!
Note: Even though this is a US list, I can’t resist adding the Westin Bayshore in Vancouver. Emily and I stayed here and the views of the mountains and ocean from our room were fantastic!
There are plenty of beautiful Starwood hotels right here at home!
The sign-up bonus on the AMEX Starwood card (personal and small business) is usually 25,000 Starwood points, so you’ll get an extra 5,000 Starwood points with the current 30,000 point sign-up bonus. That’s valuable because Starwood points can be used for Big Travel such as incredible hotels and flights. And they’re hard to earn.
This increased bonus typically only comes around once per year. This time it expires on September 14, 2015.
Which hotels would you add to my list?
