You can earn 40,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points when you spend $3,000 on purchases within the 1st 3 months of opening an AMEX Platinum account.
AMEX Membership Rewards points are flexible and transfer to many airline and hotel partners. And there are lots of ways you can use the AMEX Membership Rewards points to get to places like Europe and India.
Plus, you’ll also get other benefits such as:
- $200 in statement credits per calendar year for airline incidentals with your selected airline (luggage fees, in-flight food & drink, etc)
- Access to airport lounges (Delta, Priority Pass, Airspace, and American Express Centurion Lounges)
- Statement credit for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck
- Terms & limitations apply
The $450 annual fee is NOT waived, but the airline credit makes this an effective $250 per year.
2 Perks You’ll Get With the AMEX Platinum Card in Sydney
AMEX Platinum cardholders get access to the American Express lounge at Sydney Airport. I stopped by during my trip home from Australia. It has a great view of the runway and a modern look. You can find the lounge in Terminal 1 by gate 24.
However, this lounge isn’t quite the same as the AMEX Centurion lounges at US Airports like Dallas, Miami, Las Vegas, and San Francisco…no spa treatments here.

Plus, I was happy to find that AMEX Platinum cardholders also get to skip the line at the outbound immigration & security screening. It was quite crowded when I was there, so this can be a terrific time saver!

Bottom Line
If you’re planning a trip to Australia, the AMEX Platinum card may come in handy!
Aside from the 40,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points bonus you’ll earn when you spend $3,000 on purchases within the 1st 3 months of opening your account, you’ll also get other perks like lounge access and airline credits!
And on my recent trip to Australia, I noticed you can get into the Express Path lane for departing Immigration and security screening at Sydney Airport along with access to the American Express airport lounge (free drinks, snacks, and Wi-Fi).
