Chase Freedom cardholders will earn 5X Chase Ultimate Rewards points (5% cash back) on up to $1,500 in combined spending next quarter (April 1 to June 30, 2018) when they activate the bonus in the following categories:

1.   Grocery Shopping

This is an excellent opportunity to earn extra Chase Ultimate Rewards points!  Because many folks spend plenty of money on groceries.  I hate shopping more than just about anything, but I still find myself in grocery stores now and again.

2.   Chase Pay

This category is an EXCELLENT deal.  Because you can use Chase Pay for making tons of online purchases.  Just select the option at checkout, and you should receive Chase Ultimate Rewards points per $1.

You can check out this example of me using Chase Pay to see how it works.

3.   PayPal

Lots of folks use PayPal, so this is a good complement to the other easy-to-spend categories.

You should be able to earn 5X Chase Ultimate Rewards points on a wide variety of purchases this quarter (up to $1,500 in combined spending).

If you spend the maximum $1,500 in bonus categories, you’ll earn 7,500 Chase Ultimate Rewards points.  That’s worth $75 in cash back!

But Chase Ultimate Rewards points are even more valuable if you have cards like the Chase Sapphire Preferred, Chase Sapphire Reserve, or Ink Business Preferred.  When you have one of these cards, you can combine your points and transfer them to lots of great airline and hotel partners!

Note:   March 14, 2018, is the last day to activate the amazing Chase Freedom 5X categories for the first quarter of 2018 (gas stationsinternet, phone, and cable bills, and Android Pay, Apple Pay, Chase Pay, and Samsung Pay).  If you activate now, you’ll earn the bonus on eligible spending retroactively for the whole quarter!

And registering for next quarter’s bonus tomorrow will NOT deactivate the current bonus categories for this quarter.

Bottom Line

Starting March 15, 2018, you’ll be able to activate the Chase Freedom bonus categories for the first quarter of 2018.  They are:

  • Grocery stores
  • Chase Pay
  • PayPal

I think Chase Pay is a big deal, because it seems like you can use it to buy just about anything online these days.  So you shouldn’t have any problem making the most of the bonus categories.

Em and I don’t earn anything from the Chase Freedom, but we’ll always share the best deals!

I don't hold this card currently, but I might be interested. Does "up to $1500 in combined spending" mean that only 7500 points can be earned per quarter? In other words, if I spend $1500 at grocery stores, $1500 with ChasePay, and $1500 on qualifying PayPal purchases, how many points can I earn at the 5x rate?

Million Mile Secrets

Escot is correct, you're capped at 7,500 bonus points total.

from past experience, the cap is 7500 points -- across all categories for that quarter.

While I'm at it, I'm a little puzzled at the indication that the last day to sign up to register for next quarter's categories is March 14th. (two weeks before the quarter starts)

In past quarters, they'd let us sign up well into the active quarter -- even counting purchases on qualifying categories for that quarter (to that point) retroactively....

apparently that's now changed?

Nadia is right, the last day to enroll and retroactively earn the bonus categories for the FIRST quarter is today, March 14, 2018.
