Lyn writes about flying nearly free on Southwest on her blog and has a written a free guide that walks you step by step through how to earn the Southwest Companion Pass.  Emily and I believe the Southwest Companion Pass is THE best deal in travel, because it lets you fly 1 person with you nearly free for up to 2 years.

I’ve asked Lyn to share a recent strategy that got her a bunch of Southwest points for free.

Lyn:   Who doesn’t love a freebie, right?  I happened upon this nifty trick to earn several hundred Southwest points the other day by signing-up for a Blue Apron trial subscription.  And I wanted to share with Million Mile Secrets readers in case it might work for you, too.

Earn 900 Southwest Points Totally Free With Blue Apron

Link:   Southwest Rapid Rewards Shopping Portal – Blue Apron

Ever heard of Blue Apron?  It’s a service that sends you recipes, as well as all the ingredients you need to cook the meals each week.  I’ve been wanting to try it for a while after family members gave it rave reviews.

Blue Apron is listed in Southwest’s Rapid Rewards Shopping Portal and allows you to earn 900 points right now if you sign-up after clicking through from the shopping portal.

If you’ve subscribed to Blue Apron for awhile, it lets you invite others to try the service free for a week.  As part of the free trial, you’ll get to try 2 recipes for 2 or 4 people over the course of a week.

My dad had invited me to try it a while ago, and I finally got around to redeeming the offer.  When you sign-up for the free trial, you do have to enter a credit card number, but you can cancel the service before you are charged.

Sign-Up for a Free Trial of Blue Apron via the Invitation Email You Receive

Apparently, I had clicked through to Blue Apron from the Southwest Shopping Portal at some point in the past, because a few days later, I got an email saying I had just earned 900 Southwest points courtesy of Blue Apron!

Now, a big caveat.  The Southwest Rapid Rewards Shopping Portal terms say that the subscription service must be active for 45 days in order to earn your points.  So, it’s possible if we cancel, that they may take away my points.  I’ll keep you posted on that.

How You Can Get 900 Free Southwest Points

If you want to try this for yourself, here’s what you need to do.

Step 1.   Find Someone Who Already Pays to Subscribe to Blue Apron

You might try posting in the comments or come join the Go to Travel Gal Cheap Southwest Flights Facebook group (you need to be a Go to Travel Gal email subscriber to join) and post there to ask if anyone has a free trial to give.

To find out if they have any free invitations they can give, they need to click on “Free Meals in the main menu of their account at

Step 3.   Click Through to From the Southwest Shopping Portal

Go to the Rapid Rewards Shopping Portal and search for Blue Apron (or click directly here).  Click through to the site from within the shopping portal so it registers a cookie.  Do NOT sign-up for the service yet.

Step 4.   Subscribe to Blue Apron Through Your Free Invitation

Open the email from your friend with the free invitation.  Click on the link and subscribe to the service to get your free trial.  You will need to enter your credit card, but you can cancel before it’s charged.  Choose your meals for the week and see how you like the service!

Step 5.   Cancel the Service via Email

Once your meals and recipes arrive in the mail, email Blue Apron at to cancel.  This is the only way to cancel the service.  Blue Apron will let you “skip a week” of receiving meals, so just to cover myself, I went ahead and told it to “skip” the following week to be sure I had plenty of time to cancel before I would be charged.

Step 6.   Wait for Your Southwest Points to Show up in Your Account!

It only took ~2 days for the 900 bonus Southwest points to appear in my account.

I Earned 900 Southwest Points Just by Signing-Up for a Free Trial of Blue Apron

While 900 points may not seem like a lot, I check Southwest fares every Tuesday and list the best deals results from 30+ cities on my blog.  And there are plenty of one-way flights from ~2,000 points or less and not just between close cities.  So with 1 or 2 sets of 900 Southwest points, you could book a flight, and these points DO qualify for the Southwest Companion Pass.

Southwest points are usually worth 1.25 to 1.43 cents each, so 900 Southwest points are worth ~$11 to ~$13 in Southwest airfare (900 points X 1.25 or 1.43 cents).

I say take as many points as you can, because they definitely add up!

Here 5 easy ways to earn MORE Southwest Companion Pass points in 2018.

Bottom Line

By signing-up for a free trial of Blue Apron through the Southwest Rapid Rewards Shopping Portal, you may be able to earn 900 free Southwest points and 2 free meals, to boot!

You’ll need a free trial invitation from someone who already uses the service.  And you can cancel any time after the free trial.

My points posted very quickly after signing-up.  But it’s possible Southwest could claw back the 900 bonus Southwest points, because the terms say you’ll need to keep your Blue Apron subscription open for at least 45 days.  I’ll report back if that’s the case.

If you have a Blue Apron free trial to share, please post in the comments!
