Welcome to the next installment of the Monday small business series!

Here’s team member Meghan to share why anyone with a small business or side hustle should never forget to ask a simple question to be sure you’re making the most of your business expenses.

Meghan:   I love earning extra cash (and travel rewards!) through various part-time gigs, like selling items on eBay, Craigslist, and Amazon.  I’ve even dabbled in real estate, through managing a vacation rental and flipping houses!

But I recently realized I’ve missed out on a few opportunities to earn even more rewards.  And I don’t want y’all to make the same mistake!

Forgetting to Ask This Simple Question Can Cost You Easy Rewards!

Here’s a reminder about the importance of asking the right questions to make sure you’re getting the most amount of miles, points, and cash back possible!

It Never Hurts to Ask

I’m in the middle of making repairs to a house I plan to sell.  And of course, there are lots of bills that come with an endeavor like this.

One of the biggest expenses associated with this particular project is the cost of a new sewer line to the house – to the tune of a few thousand dollars!  After interviewing different contractors and finding that their bids were all quite similar, I thought to myself:

I wonder if any of them accept credit card payments.  If so, I could earn tons of airline miles or hotel points from this single expense!

Then I thought to myself:

Wow, how many other times have I missed an opportunity to earn travel rewards just because I didn’t ask that simple question?

Ugh.  I HATE realizing a missed opportunity.  But it’s an important lesson to remember that it never hurts to ask, regardless of what the question is. 😉

Because it’s easy to forget that LOTS of folks accept credit card payments these days.  Especially with more and more businesses utilizing mobile credit card readers from companies like PayPal and Square.

It’s Frustrating to Realize You’ve Missed an Opportunity to Earn Miles & Points for a Purchase You Had to Make!

Luckily for me, I found a contractor that would allow me to pay with a credit card.  And as long as I paid my invoices within 7 business days, I wouldn’t be charged an extra fee!

I decided to pay my first invoice with The Blue Business℠ Plus Credit Card from American Express to earn 2X AMEX Membership Rewards points on the purchase!

And I’m planning to sign-up for a new card before my final invoice.  This way, I’ll earn a BIG sign-up bonus from a small business card by completing the minimum spending requirements in one fell swoop.

I’m considering the Chase Ink Business PreferredI’ve had my eye on it for a while now because it’s offering the largest sign-up bonus among any of the cards earning Chase Ultimate Rewards points!

You can find a complete list of all the best small business card offers (along with our reviews!) here.

Bottom Line

Paying small business expenses with the right credit card is a great way to rack up more miles, points, and cash back.  So don’t forget to ask whomever your paying if they accept credit card payments!

It’s easy to forget that lots of folks accept credit cards these days.  Even really small operations!  And hey…it never hurts to ask. 😉

I built my own home several years back. I worked a deal with the material supply company to let me pay with the credit card and if I would pay within 10 days of billing get another 10% off. This all went on the Marriott card when that was about the only points earning card back in 1990. Since then just about everything goes on a credit card with a specific point reason.

Wow, that's amazing. Sounds like you got a nice new home and loads of free hotel nights, too! I'd take that deal any day.
