Heads up!  There are some important changes coming to IHG PointBreaks, and you’re going to want to know the details.

On January 29, 2018, at 12:00 pm Eastern Time, IHG will officially unveil a revamped PointBreaks promotion.  The new terms look promising, but we don’t have all the details yet to know for sure.

IHG PointBreaks Gets an Overhaul – Good or Bad?

One of my favorite uses of miles & points is using IHG points for their incredible quarterly PointBreaks sales.  That’s because you’re able to book award nights at certain IHG hotels for only 5,000 points per night!

While you’ll still be able to book certain IHG hotels at that price, IHG now says participating hotels can cost up to 15,000 points.  Here are the changes:

  • Participating PointBreaks hotels will cost either 5,000, 10,000, or 15,000 IHG points per night
  • 200+ hotels will participate in PointBreaks (double the amount of hotels participating in previous PointBreaks promotions!)
  • You can now book PointBreaks hotels with a combination of points and cash

The only hotels we know are participating at the moment are:

Is This a Good Change?

I think this could be a positive change for IHG PointBreaks.  I always love more options for using my miles & points, and I love that double the normal amount of hotels will be participating!  I’m also glad they’re adding the ability to use points and cash for a reservation.

But until we have the full list of participating hotels and their discounted award prices, I’m not sure we can say if this is good or bad.  If we can still use 5,000 IHG points to book ~100 hotels (the same amount as before this change), I’d say this is definitely a positive thing.  But if much fewer hotels are available for 5,000 points, I’d consider this a devaluation.

We’ll see what happens Monday, January 29, 2018, at 12:00 pm Eastern Time, when IHG officially releases the full list!

Bottom Line

Hotels participating in IHG PointBreaks will no longer cost a flat 5,000 IHG points per night.  Certain hotels will now cost up to 15,000 IHG points per night.  The trade-off is that more hotels will be participating, so it’s more likely a discounted hotel will fit your travel plans.

Hopefully lots of hotels will still be available for 5,000 points!  We’ll know more by Monday, January 29, 2018, at 12 pm Eastern Time.

Huge devaluation for PointsBreaks. Many of the new list hotels were on the old PB for 5K. The Helsinki HI was often on for 5K. Now it’s 15K.

Only once in all the years of PointBreaks have I been able to take advantage of it. I will, personally, count this as a positive if it means the number of hotels available at strongly-discounted rates I can actually take advantage of improves.

If I still can’t find anything that works for me, it doesn’t matter.

Not too familiar with this promotion, when the hotels are released what are the dates you could book rooms for?

Million Mile Secrets

PointBreaks are usually quarterly, so when the hotels are released, you should have ~3 months to book them.

Hate to be a downer here but… change = negative in this game.

Just a few hours until we find out for sure! But yes, generally you’re right..
