Via Point Me to the Plane, IHG is making their yearly adjustment to the award chart.  And it’s mostly bad news.

Overall, 499 hotels are increasing the price of award nights by up to 10,000 IHG points per night.  And 192 hotels are decreasing the cost of a free night by 5,000 IHG points per night.

But the worst news is that you’ll pay more than ever for top-tier hotels.  The maximum price for an award night is increasing from 60,000 to 70,000 IHG points!

IHG 2018 Reward Price Changes
The Cost of Award Nights at Some Top IHG Hotels, Like the Intercontinental Hong Kong, Will Be Increasing from 60,000 to 70,000 IHG Points!

IHG has not announced when these changes will go into effect, but we should expect it to be soon.

IHG Award Night Changes

IHG is making changes that could affect your upcoming travel plans.  That’s because 691 IHG hotels will be changing their award prices this year.  Here’s what you need to know:

  • 499 hotels are increasing the cost of awards nights by 5,000 to 10,000 IHG points
  • 192 hotels are decreasing the cost of award nights by 5,000 IHG points
  • Top-tier IHG hotels will cost 70,000 points per night (previously 60,000 points)

Changes like these are the reason I suggest using your miles & points, rather than hoarding them.  Because their value can fluctuate practically overnight!

We don’t know when these changes are taking place.  But you can book IHG hotels ~350 days in advance.  So if you’re planning to stay at a hotel that is going up in price, use your points to lock-in the lower rates!

When these new award prices go into effect, you’ll be paying lots more for hotels like the Intercontinental San Francisco, Washington D.C., and New York.

IHG 2018 Reward Price Changes
If You Book Right Now, You Can Reserve the Crowne Plaza Terrigal in Australia for 40,000 Points Before It Increases to 50,000 Points!

If you plan to stay at one of the hotels increasing award prices, I would suggest booking now, even if you’re plans are NOT set in stone.  That’s because you can cancel IHG award nights for free.

But if you’re planning to stay at one of the hotels decreasing award prices, you should wait until after the changes take effect to book.  Or if you already have a reservation, you can always re-book after the change to get a lower price.

Want More IHG Points?

There are plenty of ways to earn IHG points.  For example, you can use the IHG Cash & Points trick to “buy” points for ~0.6 cents point, which is a great deal if you’re booking an IHG PointBreaks hotel for only 5,000 IHG points!

This is a great way to collect IHG points, because they are usually worth ~0.7 cents each.  Just keep in mind, these changes in award prices might decrease the value you get from your IHG points depending on where you stay.

To earn more IHG points, you can:

Bottom Line

IHG is changing the award prices of ~700 hotels.  Nearly 500 hotels are going up in price, while 192 hotels are decreasing.  All of the changes are between 5,000 and 10,000 IHG points.

Loyalty programs can devalue their miles & points at any time!  That’s why I tell folks to use their miles & points sooner rather than later.

We don’t know exactly when the changes are taking place.  So if you’re planning to stay at a hotel that will be increasing in price, you can book now and lock-in the lower price.  Or if you’ve already booked a hotel that’s decreasing in price, wait until after the changes take effect to re-book at the cheaper rate!

Do these changes affect your travel plans for 2018?

I have the Chase IHG card and have approx 90,000 points. I dont have travel plans in the future to reserve hotels at this time. I also have a Chase Sapphire Reserve Card.(MY FAVORITE CARD EVER) Is it possible to transfer my IHP points to chase reserve? If no- would it be of good value to transfer to airline miles...preferred airline AA? PLEASE HELP

Million Mile Secrets

Jane,

You cannot transfer IHG points to your Chase Sapphire Reserve card or any other card.

Even with this change, your IHG points are NOT worthless. Because less than 10% of IHG hotels are increasing in price.

You could transfer them to airline miles, but in most cases, that is not a good deal! And the ability to transfer IHG points into airline miles is not changing or going away. So even if you want to go this route, there is no rush to do it.

Here is a post with more details on transferring hotel points to airline miles:
