Via Miles to Memories, the Chase Freedom rotating 5X bonus categories are out for the beginning of next year!  And these categories are delightfully unique.

You can earn 5X Chase Ultimate Rewards points (5% cash back) with your Chase Freedom on up to $1,500 in combined spending at gas stations, internet, phone, and cable bills, and Android Pay, Apple Pay, Chase Pay, and Samsung Pay from January 1 to March 31, 2018.

And you’ll be able to activate these bonus categories starting tomorrow, December 15, 2017.

Emily and I don’t earn a commission on the Chase Freedom, but we’ll always tell you about the best deals.

Chase Freedom cardholders will earn 5X Chase Ultimate Rewards points (5% cash back) on up to $1,500 in combined spending next quarter (January 1, 2018, to March 31, 2018) when they activate the bonus in the following categories:

1.   Gas Stations

This is an excellent option to earn extra Chase Ultimate Rewards points!  Because many folks spend plenty of money on fuel.  Plus, gas stations usually sell much more than just gas.  Some offer groceries, fast food, toiletries, etc!

2.   Internet, Phone, and Cable Bills

This category isn’t very thrilling.  That’s because Chase small business cards like the Ink Business Preferred and Chase Ink Plus (no longer available) already earn bonus points for these purchases.  So I’d rather use my Chase Freedom for other purchases that do NOT already earn bonus points.

But if you don’t have another card that earns a bonus in these categories, this is another easy way to earn lots of bonus points!

3.   Android Pay, Apple Pay, Chase Pay, and Samsung Pay

This category seems almost too good to be true!  TONS of stores accept mobile wallets.  And some of them, like Chase Pay, you can use online.

This means you should be able to earn 5X Chase Ultimate Rewards points on a wide variety of purchases this quarter (up to $1,500 in combined spending).

If you spend the maximum $1,500 in bonus categories, you’ll earn 7,500 Chase Ultimate Rewards points.  That’s worth $75 in cash back!

But Chase Ultimate Rewards points are even more valuable if you have cards like the Chase Sapphire Preferred, Chase Sapphire Reserve, or Ink Business Preferred.  When you have one of these cards, you can combine your points and transfer them to lots of great airline and hotel partners!

Note:   Today, December 14, 2017, is the last day to activate the Chase Freedom 5X categories for the 4th quarter of 2017 (Walmart and department stores).  If you activate now, you’ll earn the bonus on eligible spending retroactively for the whole quarter.

And registering for next quarter’s bonus tomorrow will NOT deactivate the current bonus categories for this quarter.

Bottom Line

Starting tomorrow, December 15, 2017, you’ll be able to activate the Chase Freedom bonus categories for the first quarter of 2018.  They are:

  • Gas stations
  • Internet, phone, and cable bills
  • Apple Pay, Chase Pay, Android Pay, and Samsung Pay

The mobile wallet category is HUGE, because nearly every merchant seems to accept them as payment these days.  So you shouldn’t have any problem making the most of the bonus categories.

We don’t earn anything from the Chase Freedom, but Emily and I will always share the best deals!

Curious if readers think Freedom really is better than Freedom Unlimited? Yes 5x is better than 1.5 but the limit is $1500 per quarter and the categories are not always helpful. Many people spend $1500 per month rather than per quarter so the limit is a deterrent.

#2. You don't mention that the no-fee Chase Ink Cash earns already earns 5x in these categories. The mentioned Ink Business Preferred only earns 3x. This Freedom category is still higher that IBP.

Nice! The next quarter is going to be great. We'll be using this card for almost everything.
