Via One Mile at a Time, you can buy American Airlines miles for as little as ~1.77 cents each through January 4, 2018.

You’ll have to buy a LOT of miles to get the best deal.  So if you’re only interested in buying a few thousand miles, this promotion won’t help you tremendously.  But I’ll show you who this deal can help!

Link:   American Airlines Buy Miles Promotion

Through January 4, 2018, you’ll earn bonus miles when you buy or gift American Airlines miles.  But you’ll have to purchase 10,000+ American Airlines miles to trigger the promotion.

The more miles you buy, the bigger the bonus.  And the cheaper the miles become.

Here’s what you’ll earn:

  • Buy 10,000 to 24,000 American Airlines miles – Get 3,000 bonus miles
  • Buy 25,000 to 49,000 American Airlines miles – Get 9,000 bonus miles
  • Buy 50,000 to 74,000 American Airlines miles – Get 27,000 bonus miles
  • Buy 75,000 to 99,000 American Airlines miles – Get 48,000 bonus miles
  • Buy 100,000 to 149,000 American Airlines miles – Get 72,000 bonus miles
  • Buy 150,000 American Airlines miles – Get 120,000 bonus miles

So if you buy 10,000 American Airlines miles to the get minimum 3,000 mile bonus, you’ll pay ~$347, or ~2.67 cents per mile (~$347 / 13,000 miles).

And if you buy 150,000 American Airlines miles to earn the maximum 120,000 mile bonus, you’ll pay ~$4,786, or ~1.77 cents per mile (~$4,786 / 270,000 miles).

Note:   150,000 American Airlines miles is the maximum number you can purchase (pre-bonus) per calendar year.  That includes miles bought or received as a gift!

Is This a Good Deal?

This isn’t the best American Airlines sale this year, but it’s a better promotion than several we’ve seen in the previous months.

This is especially good for folks who want to fly Business Class!  Because buying miles with this promotion and booking a saver level award is a good way to “buy” Business Class tickets at a big discount.

Buying Miles at a Discount Could Be a Cheaper Way to Fly in Business Class

If you maxed out the promotion and bought 150,000 American Airlines miles, you’ll get a 120,000 mile bonus.  And the miles would cost you ~$4,786, which is ~1.77 cents per mile.

Round-trip Business Class tickets from the US to Europe on American Airlines planes cost 115,000 American Airlines miles.  So you would have enough American Airlines miles for 2 round-trip Business Class award seats to Europe!  And you would still have 40,000 miles left.

Depending on your route, Business Class tickets to Europe can cost ~$6,000+ each!  So being able to get 2 tickets for under $5,000 is a big deal!

Bottom Line

Through January 4, 2018, you can buy American Airlines miles for as little as ~1.77 cents each!

You’ll earn bonus American Airlines miles when you buy or gift at least 10,000 miles through January 4, 2018.  The more you buy, the more you’ll save.

This could be a good deal if you have a specific award flight in mind.  You might even be able to fly Business or First Class at a discount!

AAdvantage miles aren't a good deal at any price if saver awards are limited to non-existent. Also, remember what you pay now is not what those miles may be worth when you try to use them; American can devalue them anytime they want and with no justification. American is playing you for a sucker if you sent them cold cash for AAdvantage miles.

Million Mile Secrets

Agreed. I usually don't recommend buying miles if you haven't already found an award you want.

Both I and my wife have our own miles account. I have 100K miles, she is a little short of 100K miles. Could she gift her miles to me, the bonus would ensure I would have +200K miles and could I then use these 200K miles to book an award for both of us? If I'm correct you can book an award for your partner as long as you travel together?

Million Mile Secrets

If your wife transfers her miles to you she'll pay 1.25 cents per mile for the privilege, and you will not earn bonus miles. So it would be much cheaper to only the buy the miles she needs for the award, and not bother with the mileage transfer.

And you can book an award for anyone with your miles, even if it's not a partner.

Transferring miles cost money. You can book tickets for any one from your account. Not necessary to be your family member. If each ticket cost 50k points then its better of doing 2 one ways using your points for to/from and similarly from your wife account.

How many miles to Mauiin the summer?

Million Mile Secrets

American Airlines miles are usually not the best way to get to Hawaii.

Here are a couple of posts on different ways to book awards to Hawaii:

This is nonsense since there never is any availability except on BA.

Million Mile Secrets

American Airlines award seats have definitely been harder to come by. But while researching this post I was able to find tons Business Class saver level awards from Chicago to both Prague & Paris next year.

It might just depend on when and where you want to fly.

This. I have a few hundred thousand miles on American and, without fail, I can never find any saver level awards. Stopped flying American a couple years ago domestically when I got the Companion Pass and haven't looked back. And who wants to pay BA taxes and fees? For all the complaints I hear about Delta, I actually occasionally use Delta miles. I NEVER use my AA miles anymore.
