Through November 27, 2017, you can earn a bonus when you buy or gift American Airlines miles.  The bonus is tiered based on how many miles you purchase.  And you must purchase at least 10,000 miles to get a bonus.

Here’s what you’ll get:

  • Buy 10,000 to 24,000 American Airlines miles – Get 2,500 bonus miles
  • Buy 25,000 to 49,000 American Airlines miles – Get 7,500 bonus miles
  • Buy 50,000 to 74,000 American Airlines miles – Get 22,500 bonus miles
  • Buy 75,000 to 99,000 American Airlines miles – Get 40,000 bonus miles
  • Buy 100,000 to 149,000 American Airlines miles – Get 60,000 bonus miles
  • Buy 150,000 American Airlines miles – Get 100,000 bonus miles

So if you buy 150,000 American Airlines miles you’ll earn the maximum 100,000 mile bonus.  And you’ll pay ~$4,787, or ~1.9 cents per mile (~$4,787 / 250,000 miles).

Note:   150,000 American Airlines miles is the maximum number you can purchase (pre-bonus) per calendar year.  That includes miles bought or received as a gift!

Is It Worth It?

There have been better deals for buying American Airlines miles.  And low-level American Airlines awards seats can be hard to come by.

So unless you have a specific ticket you want to book and need a few extra miles to top off your account, it likely doesn’t make sense. But it could be worth it if you don’t want to pay cash for an otherwise expense Business or First Class ticket!

For example, if you buy 150,000 American Airlines miles for ~$4,787, you’ll get a 100,000 mile bonus for a total of 250,000 American Airlines miles.  And that’s more than enough miles for 2 round-trip Business Class tickets to Europe.  That can easily cost $8,000+ a piece!  Saving you a few thousand dollars.

Here’s more about booking American Airlines award flights like a pro.

Bottom Line

Through November 27, 2017, you can buy American Airlines miles for as little as ~1.9 cents each.

You’ll earn a bonus when you buy or gift at least 10,000 miles.  The bonus is tiered, so the more miles you buy the better deal you’ll get.

That said, we seen better offers for buying American Airlines miles in the past.  And American Airlines award seats can be notoriously difficult to find.  So unless you have a particular trip in mind (and know you can find an award seat!), this deal probably isn’t worth it.
