Usually, I would NOT recommend doing this because of the poor transfer ratios. But it’s a good deal if you book a Marriott Hotel + Air package, especially if you transfer Starwood points to Marriott, first!
It could also be worth it to use any excess hotel points you don’t have a need for.
Transfer Hotel Points to United Airlines
Through November 30, 2017, you’ll get a 30% bonus when you transfer hotel points to United Airlines.
Eligible hotel programs include:
- Choice Hotels
- Club Carlson
- Golden Circle (Shangri-La Hotels)
You can earn a maximum bonus of 25,000 United Airlines miles through this promotion. So you transfer large amounts of hotel points, the bonus is actually less than 30%.
Plus, when you transfer Club Carlson points, you’ll get a 100% bonus instead of 30%. Up to a maximum of 25,000 bonus United Airlines miles.
And Choice Hotels is offering a better transfer ratio than normal, on top of the transfer bonus. So instead of getting 1,000 miles for every 5,000 Choice points you transfer, you’ll get 2,500 miles.
Adding the 30% transfer bonus, you’ll get 3,250 miles for every 5,000 points you transfer.
Just keep in mind, you can NOT transfer points from any of these programs to United Airlines at a 1:1 ratio. And in most cases, the transfer ratios are NOT favorable.
Is It Worth It?
If you’re considering a Marriott Hotel + Air package, this promotion is definitely worth a look!
For example, you can convert 270,000 Marriott points to get a 7-night stay at a Category 1 to 5 Marriott hotel plus 157,000 United Airlines miles (including the 25,000 mile transfer bonus). Typically, you’d only get 132,000 United Airlines miles through this redemption method.
This means you can get 157,000 United Airlines miles by converting 90,000 Starwood points to Marriott points, which is a fantastic deal! Plus you’ll get a 7-night stay at a Marriott category 1 to 5 hotel.
Normally, Starwood points transfer to United Airlines at a 2:1 ratio.
More Ways to Earn United Airlines Miles
There are lots of ways to earn United Airlines miles!
You can transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards points to United Airlines at a 1:1 ratio. This is good for folks with these cards:
- Chase Sapphire Preferred

- Chase Ink Business Preferred
- Ink Bold (no longer available)
- Ink Plus (no longer available)
Through November 30, 2017, you can earn a 30% bonus when you transfer hotel points to United Airlines.
Because of the less favorable transfer ratios, this is not a good deal in most cases.
