If you don’t like the hassle of dealing with blackout dates or finding open award seats or hotel nights, the Citi ThankYou® Premier Card might make sense for you!
You can earn 50,000 Citi ThankYou points after meeting the minimum spending requirements on the Citi ThankYou Premier card. That’s worth $625 in travel with NO blackout dates when you book through the ThankYou® Travel Center . Or possibly more if you transfer them to to airline partners!
I’ll share the details of the Citi ThankYou Premier card. And help you decide whether it’s right for you!
Citi ThankYou Premier Credit Card Review 2017
The sign-up bonus is usually only 30,000 or 40,000 Citi ThankYou points, so this a good deal!
The card also comes with perks like:
- 3X Citi ThankYou points per $1 spent on travel (including gas stations, airfare, hotels, cruises, car rental agencies, travel agencies, railways, public transportation, tolls, taxis, parking, and more)
- 2X Citi ThankYou points per $1 spent on dining and entertainment (amusement parks, museums, sporting events, movies, and more)
- No foreign transaction fees
And the $95 annual fee is waived the first year.
Know the New Citi Application Rules Before Applying!
Just remember, you can’t earn the sign-up bonus for any Citi credit card if you’ve either opened or closed a card of the same “brand” in the past 24 months. So if you’ve opened or closed a Citi ThankYou Premier, Citi Prestige, or Citi ThankYou Preferred card in the past 24 months, you’re not eligible for the bonus on the Citi ThankYou Premier.
What Can You Do With 50,000 Citi ThankYou Points?
1. Book Travel Through Citi’s Travel Center
You can use 50,000 Citi ThankYou points to book up to $625 in travel, including purchases of airfare, hotels, car rentals, and cruises, through the Citi Travel Center.
You can buy:
- Car Rentals
What’s especially convenient about this option is that you don’t have to worry about blackout dates or finding award seats or nights. And you’ll earn miles for your flights!
2. Transfer Points to Travel Partners
When you have the Citi ThankYou Premier (or the Citi Prestige, or Citi Chairman (no longer available) card), you can transfer your Citi ThankYou points to these airline partners:
- Cathay Pacific
- EVA Air
- Flying Blue (Air France / KLM)
- Garuda Indonesia
- Jet Airways
- Malaysia Airlines
- Qatar Airways
- Singapore Airlines
- Thai Airways
- Turkish Airlines
- Virgin Atlantic
Citi ThankYou points transfer at a 1:1 ratio with all of the above partners except JetBlue (5:4 ratio). And transfers must occur in 1,000-point increments.
Some of the best ways to make the most of your points include by transferring them to partners like:
- Virgin Atlantic to fly to Hawaii on Hawaiian Airlines
- Flying Blue to book Promo Awards (These are discount awards to Europe on Air France and KLM that change each month)
- Singapore Airlines to fly to Hawaii on United Airlines
3. Buy Gift Cards & Merchandise
You can trade in Citi ThankYou points for gift cards at 1 cent per point. So 50,000 points is worth $500 in gift cards.
But your points are worth even less (0.8 cents per point) when you redeem them for merchandise. Whether through Amazon or Citi’s ThankYou point portal.
Some folks might like buying gift cards with their points, but I’d rather get more value using the points for travel!
Is It Worth It?
For folks who want to avoid the hassle of looking for award seats or nights at hotels, the Citi ThankYou Premier could be a great option. Because the sign-up bonus alone is worth $625 in travel booked through Citi’s travel center.
You’ll also earn 3X Citi ThankYou points per $1 spent on travel, including gas. Which can really add up if you drive a lot!
Plus, if you have the Citi ThankYou Premier (or the Citi Prestige, or Citi Chairman card (no longer available) card), you can combine points from other ThankYou points earning cards (like the Citi ThankYou Preferred or Citi ThankYou Preferred for College Students) into ONE account. And then transfer them to airline partners!
That said, the Citi Prestige is currently offering a 75,000 Citi ThankYou point sign-up bonus after spending $7,500 on purchases within the first 3 months of account opening. And that’s worth over $900 in airfare.
So if you’re looking for a bigger sign-up bonus, the Citi Prestige might be a better choice. But the Citi ThankYou Premier comes with a lower minimum spending requirement, lower annual fee, and a better bonus on travel purchases.
Team member Scott was able to get both cards before Citi tightened its application rules. But if he had to choose between the 2 cards, he’d get the Citi Prestige. Because he knows he can get Big Travel from the card’s great perks, like the annual statement credit for airline fees, Global Entry application fee credit, and Priority Pass Lounge access.
But you’ll have to decide for yourself which card makes the most sense for you. And whether the higher annual fee on the Citi Prestige is worth it for your particular situation!
You can now earn 50,000 Citi ThankYou points when you sign-up for the Citi ThankYou Premier card and spend $4,000 on purchases within the first 3 months of opening your account.
50,000 Citi ThankYou points are worth $625 in airfare (or hotels, cruises, and car rentals) when you book through the Citi Travel Center. Or you can transfer to airline partners for flights to Hawaii and Europe!
You’ll also earn 3x Citi ThankYou points per $1 spent on travel (including gas stations!) and 2x Citi ThankYou points on dining and entertainment. And the $95 annual fee is waived the first year!
If you’re looking for a flexible rewards card, it’s worth considering the Citi ThankYou Premier. That said, the Citi Prestige is offering an even bigger sign-up bonus, but it comes with a much higher annual fee. So it’s worth comparing the 2 cards and deciding which makes the most sense for your personal travel goals.
