Maintaining a fitness routine while traveling is important for lots of folks.  But a packed schedule on vacation might make you less interested in exercise.

That said, there are lots of terrific ways to stay in shape while traveling!  From booking a room at a health-conscious hotel brand to signing-up for classes at local fitness studios, your workouts don’t have to stop when you’re away from home.

I’ll share tips for staying active while traveling!

Exercise Tips While Traveling

Depending on your travel destination, you might not have access to the same fitness facilities and equipment you’re used to at home.  But planning ahead and adapting to your vacation environment can help you with your workout plan.

Here are 5 exercise tips to consider while traveling.

1.   Stay at Fitness-Friendly Hotel Brands

Most major hotel chains have fitness centers on the premises.  But the quality and type of equipment can vary.  These hotel brands or specially designed hotel fitness programs are ideal for folks who like to workout:

For example, at Westin brand hotels, you can pay $5 to rent New Balance running shoes and clothing to work out.  This means you can pack lighter if you plan to exercise!

And EVEN Hotels go beyond having just a traditional fitness center.  You’ll enjoy in-room training areas with medicine balls and equipment, so you don’t even have to leave the room to exercise!

2.   Check the Hotel Calendar for Fitness Schedules

Many resort-style hotels offer group fitness activities, which are included in the price of your stay.

For example, I checked the schedule at The Westin Maui Resort & Spa, Ka’anapali in Maui.  And there are daily classes for yoga, water aerobics, and group training.

And you might have to pay extra, but check if your hotel has sports equipment for rent, like kayaks or stand-up paddle boards.  These activities can be a fun and exciting way to get in a workout.

3.   Attend Classes at Boutique Fitness Studios

If you enjoy group fitness classes, like cycling or pilates, you might sign-up for a program like ClassPass.  With a membership, you can attend workout classes at studios in 30+ cities around the world, including many popular travel destinations.

Team member Keith’s wife has used her ClassPass membership to attend classes in Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Seattle, and other cities!  She likes how easy it is to register for a class through the mobile app.  And she prefers the team environment of a group class over working out in a hotel gym.

There are other popular fitness studios with memberships that you can use at multiple locations throughout the US.  Some others include Barry’s BootcampPureBarre, and SoulCycle.

4.   Use Fitness Apps for Workout Routine Inspiration

With a smartphone, you can download a fitness app to give you workout ideas while traveling.  It’s like having a personal trainer in your pocket!

And you can choose an app that fits your situation best.  For example, you might have access to a hotel fitness center with dumbbells and cardio equipment.  So an app could show you a customized workout with the available equipment.

Or you can find an app that guides you through a yoga session without leaving your room.  Even without an app, you can get your heart rate up in your hotel room by doing exercises like jumping jacks, push-ups, and sit-ups.

5.   Plan Active Travel Excursions

Instead of booking a bus tour to explore a new city, you might select a more active option.  For example, team member Scott loved free walking historical tours in Budapest and Warsaw.  And I’ve been meaning to walk the length of Manhattan to see the sights.  I’ll do it next time! 🙂

Even if you’re not on a tour, you might walk instead of using ride share services or public transportation.  Team member Keith remembers his smartphone showing he took 25,000+ steps on his first visit to San Francisco, including lots of uphill climbs!

And you can’t help but stay active on certain trips, like team member Meghan’s journey hiking through 4 National Parks.

Depending on your travel destination, you can also take advantage of the local culture to try something new and healthy.  Team member Scott heard of the health benefits of spending time in a sauna.  So while in Finland he embraced this integral part of their culture.

You could find yourself on an unexpected workout, too.  Like the time Emily and I adopted a dog for a day in Kauai.  We got our exercise by walking the dog along the bike path in Kapaa Beach Park.

Bottom Line

Your fitness routine doesn’t have to take a vacation when you travel.  There are lots of terrific ways to stay physically active when you’re away from home.

  • Stay at fitness-friendly hotel brands
