Love Starwood points?  Great news!

Via One Mile at a Time, AMEX is running a terrific targeted promotion for folks with the Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express!

With this deal, you’ll earn 10,000 bonus Starwood points after registering and spending $10,000+ on eligible purchases by September 30, 2017.

$10,000 in spending is a lot, but it could be worth it, because Starwood points are so valuable!  And it’s like earning 2 Starwood points per $1 (or 2.5 airline miles per $1 if you transfer Starwood points to airline miles) on your everyday purchases!

Let’s take a look at the details of the promotion.

When you enroll your AMEX Starwood personal card in this offer by August 15, 2017, you’ll earn a bonus of 10,000 Starwood points when you spend $10,000 on eligible purchases by September 30, 2017.

Only purchases you make after enrolling will count toward meeting the $10,000 spending requirement.  And any spending authorized users make WILL count toward the required spending!  Even though they are NOT eligible to earn bonus points.

Folks on Reddit have even reported being targeted for a bigger bonus!  So check your email or log-in here to see if you qualify.

Is This a Good Deal?

If you’ve been targeted, this deal is definitely worth considering!

Because with this offer, you’ll essentially earn an additional Starwood point per $1 in spending, if you spend exactly $10,000 on purchases by September 30, 2017.  Meaning you’ll earn 20,000 Starwood points total (10,000 points from spending + 10,000 bonus points)!

That’s enough for 2 free nights at a category 4 Starwood hotel, like the Sheraton Mountain Vista Villas near Vail, Colorado!

AMEX Starwood Spending Promotion
Rooms at the Sheraton Mountain Vista Villas Can Cost Nearly $200 per Night. But You Can Save Money Using Your Starwood Points for a Free Stay!

And don’t forget, you can link your Starwood and Marriott accounts and transfer the points you earn with this promotion to your Marriott account at a 1:3 ratio.

Or transfer 20,000 Starwood points to airlines with a 1:1 transfer ratio, like United Airlines, to earn 25,000 airline miles (20,000 miles + 5,000 mile bonus).  Which is enough for a round-trip coach saver award ticket within the US!

This is also a fantastic deal because the AMEX Starwood cards are best for regular spending if you want to earn airline miles.  So this promotion makes using the card for everyday purchases a no-brainer!

That said, if you’re already working on meeting minimum spending requirements for this or other cards, spending $10,000 in 3 months might be tricky.  Here are a few ideas that can help.

Bottom Line

If you’re an AMEX Starwood personal cardholder, you may be targeted to earn 10,000 bonus Starwood points (or more!).  To get in on the promotion, you must register and spend $10,000 on eligible purchases by September 30, 2017.

If you spend exactly $10,000 on purchases, it’s like earning 2X Starwood points per $1 on your everyday spending.  That’s a great deal, because Starwood points are hard to earn and there are so many ways to use them.

Even if you’re not sure you can meet the $10,000 spending requirement, it’s worth enrolling, because it only takes a few seconds.

This is a steep spending requirement. Glad I am NOT targeted! 🙂

Spend $10k to get 20k points? In other words, spend $10,000 in order to buy 20k points for 50 cents each. Don't get me wrong -- I love to receive bonus points -- but how is this a fantastic deal when I can spend (for example) $700 to buy 20k Starpoints for 3.5 cents apiece on I'm rather new to this, so I might have missed something. Perhaps I forgot to carry the 1.

I think what you're missing is that when you normally spend $10k you receive $10k worth of merchandise - plus the points - the 20k points are free - a side benefit. When you buy points, the points are the merchandise - you've received nothing else.

"They offered to credit back the fee if I kept it so I did."

Ouch! When I called to cancel they offered me 10k Starpoints if I agreed to pay the annual fee. Would you prefer 10k Starpoints for a $95 spend or a $10,000 spend!

Also you can refer a friend for this card and get 7,500 Starpoints. They pay no annual fee the first year and even if they never use it you still get the 7,500 Starpoints.

So no, $10,000 spend for 10,000 points is NOT a good deal unless you've got a small business and spend a lot on the card.

$10k spend in the span of 4 to 6 weeks...that is some serious spend. I just called to cancel my SPG Amex last night after 6 years of having it. They offered to credit back the fee if I kept it so I did. I could no longer justify the $95 annual fee when I was accumulating not enough points. If they could add 2x points on gas, groceries, dining, utilities or something other than spg stays then it would be a solid card to keep. For an infrequent SPG property user it is too expensive at $95/yr...The previous $60 fee was debatable.

Doesn't look like this offer is available to everybody, even if they do have and SPG card.

Somewhat misleading to read the article thinking its for all, only to click the links to find out you do not qualify. Sounds like somebody is getting paid on page redirects....
