Via The Points Guy, some folks are being targeted to earn the Southwest Companion Pass after completing 5 round-trip paid flights (or 10 one-way flights) on Southwest!  And because Southwest is known for rock-bottom prices, this could be an excellent deal!

Southwest Companion Pass Promotion 2017

Link:   Southwest Companion Pass

Last year I told you about a targeted offer to earn the Southwest Companion Pass after completing 5 round-trip flights on Southwest.

And now, the same promotion is back!  Southwest is sending out targeted emails giving folks the chance to earn the Southwest Companion Pass through December 31, 2018.  Here are the details:

  • You must fly round-trip (or 10 one-way) flights
  • Flights must be paid (NOT award flights)
  • Flights must be completed by October 31, 2017

You must register through your targeted email to be eligible for the promotion.

Data points show that folks from different cities, like Phoenix and Tulsa were targeted for this offer.  So check your email to see if your city was targeted!

Is This a Good Deal?

This is a great deal for folks who were targeted for this promotion.  You usually need to fly 100 one-way flights on Southwest within a calendar year to earn the Companion Pass.  So this promotion is like already having 90 one-way flights under your belt!

If you do NOT plan to fly 10 one-way flights by October 31, 2017, it could be worth taking a few inexpensive Southwest flights just to take advantage of this deal.  Because the Companion Pass can save you thousands of dollars!

Note:   You can also qualify for the Companion Pass by earning 110,000 Southwest points in a calendar year.

Emily and I love Southwest.  That’s because everyone gets 2 free checked bags, and you can change or cancel your ticket within 10 minutes of your flight with NO penalty!

You can also qualify for the Southwest Companion Pass by earning 110,000 Southwest points in a calendar year.  If you apply for 1 Southwest personal card and 1 Southwest business card, you’ll earn 104,000 Southwest points (including points from minimum spending).  And you can easily earn the extra 6,000 points to reach the 110,000 points required for the Companion Pass (just remember that transferring hotel points no longer count towards the Companion Pass).

But don’t forget about Chase’s stricter approval rules.  And remember to avoid these 3 common mistakes when you’re working towards the Companion Pass.

Bottom Line

Southwest is targeting folks from select cities to earn the Southwest Companion Pass after just 5 round-trip (or 10 one-way) paid flights!  This is a worthwhile deal, because the Southwest Companion Pass can easily save you thousands.  It’s my favorite deal in travel!

I'm wondering if I should get the southwest cc to work towards the companion pass but I'm confused whether I should be getting the pass in mid- Oct or mid- Nov to reach 110k points in JAN 2018 that way I can have it until 2019.

I'm working on third yr of companion pass. Could I add another southwest card with sign on bonus points to get to the 110,000 points?

I read in the rules for the Companion Pass that the bonus points from getting a card and spending a certain amount in the first months DO NOT count toward the Companion Pass. It's in the small print.

That is incorrect. Bonus points from other promotions, such as the shopping portal do not count but all points that come from your Chase SW credit card, do count.
