Should You Buy Miles?

This could be a good deal for folks who want more miles to top-off their account for an award flight.  Or if you’d rather not pay cash for an otherwise expensive Business or First Class ticket.

If You’ve Been Wanting to Try Business Class, You Can Buy Miles From This Promotion and Book Your Dream Seats at a Big Discount!

For example, if you spent ~$4,311 to buy 150,000 miles, you’ll receive a 100,000 mile bonus.  You’d then have more than enough miles for 2 round-trip Business Class tickets to Europe, which can cost ~$8,000+ each!

That said, saver level award flights on American Airlines can be hard to find.  So make sure the seats you want are available before you buy the miles.

The AA site says it costs $3982.50 for the 150,000 miles + 100,000 mile bonus. Wouldn’t that make it 1.59 cents/mile? Does that change anything and make this deal worth buying? Or, since miles are generally only redeemable at 1-1.4 cent values, are you better off just not ever buying AA miles?

Saying Saver Seats on American are hard to find is like saying unicorns are hard to find. Neither exist. I will one day spend my half-million AA miles on some nice first class seats, but I’d rather use them on Saver fares…. WHICH DON’T EXIST ON AMERICAN. I think there should be an entire post about this / dedicated to shaming American.
