For a limited time, British Airways is selling Avios points at a discount!  And there’s no minimum amount of points you need to buy to get the sale price.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • This offer expires on June 30, 2017, at 6:59 pm Eastern Time
  • You’ll get a 50% bonus on any amount of points you buy
  • You can buy a maximum of 100,000 British Airways Avios points through this promotion, and receive a maximum of 50,000 bonus British Airways Avios points

So if you buy 100,000 British Airways Avios points, you’ll receive 150,000 total points, and pay $2,775.  That’s a rate of 1.85 cents each ($2,775 / 150,000 points).

Is This a Good Deal?

If you already have travel plans, this could be a good deal for you.  But I wouldn’t recommend just stocking up on points.

US domestic non-stop flights under 1,151 miles cost only 7,500 British Airways Avios points when you use them on oneworld partners like American Airlines and Alaska Airlines.

And flights outside the US are 4,500 British Airways Avios points one-way for flights under 650 miles.  And 7,500 British Airways Avios points for flights 651 to 1,151 miles.

You can use Great Circle Mapper to calculate the distance between airports.

For example, a flight from Menorca, Spain, to Innsbruck, Austria, is usually around $200+ round-trip.  Or you can use 4,500 British Airways Avios points.

Austria Is Beautiful ANY Time of Year. And If You’re Already in Europe, British Airways Avios Points Can Help You Get There for Cheap!

You could buy 4,500 British Airways Avios points for $108, and save $90+ on your flight!  Because 3,000 British Airways Avios points cost $108, and you’ll get a 1,500 point bonus (3,000 points + 1,500 points = 4,500 points).

Look at the British Airways Avios points calculator from Wandering Aramean to help you decide if buying British Airways Avios points is worth it for your travel goals.

Bottom Line

British Airways is giving folks 50% more points when they purchase British Airways Avios points through June 30, 2017.

This deal makes purchasing British Airways Avios cheaper, but it’s still not a no-brainer.  If you have an immediate use for the points, like domestic or international short-haul flights, it could be worth it for you.
