If You’re a Digital Freelancer, You Have Lots of Options When It Comes to Small Business Credit Cards

Let’s take a look at great small business credit cards for freelancers like writers, web and graphic designers, coders, and more!

Freelancers Are Eligible for Small Business Cards

Link:   3 Ways You May Qualify for a Small Business Card

It may be easier than you think to qualify for a small business credit card.  You don’t need to have employees or lots of revenue!

And it’s a good idea to get one because it makes it easier to track your purchases and keeps them separate from your personal expenses.  Which is useful at tax time.

Folks who operate their business as a sole proprietor can apply using their Social Security Number instead of an EIN (Employer Identification Number) or tax number.

Digital freelancers can use a small business credit card for business purchases like:

  • Hardware, like a new monitor, mouse, tablet, etc.
  • Software, like editing suites, or industry-specific programs
  • Online advertising like Google, Yahoo!, and Facebook
  • Office supplies like paper, ink/toner, or office furniture
  • Domain names
  • Gasoline
  • Internet service
  • Cell phone service
  • Media database subscriptions
  • Industry journals
  • And anything else you purchase to complete your work!

The AMEX SimplyCash Plus small business card has a $400 sign-up bonus (in the form of a statement credit) after meeting minimum spending requirements.

You’ll earn a $200 statement credit after you spend $5,000 or more on qualifying purchases on your card within the first 6 months of card membership.  And an additional $200 statement credit after spending an additional $10,000 on purchases on your card within the first year of card membership.

You’ll also get:

  • 5% cash back at office supply stores in the US and on your US wireless phone bill (up to $50,000 in purchases per calendar year)
  • 3% cash back on eligible purchases (up to $50,000 in purchases per calendar year) in 1 of the following categories of your choice (like computer hardware & software, US gas stations & restaurants, and airfare & hotel stays purchased directly with the airline or hotel)
  • 1% cash back on everything else
  • The ability to “buy above your credit limit”
  • 2.7% foreign transaction fee after conversion to US dollars
  • Terms and limitations apply

Plus, there’s no annual fee!

You’ll also receive special discounts from the AMEX OPEN small business program (including BN.com and HP).

And, because it’s an AMEX card, it’s eligible for lots of other perks and benefits.  You can sign-up for AMEX Offers with AMEX small business cards, too.

For example, there have been offers to save at Best Buy and Staples.  So it’s an easy way to save money on supplies or hardware.

And an offer at GoDaddy.com for domain services, which was useful for setting up a web-based business.  I always update Million Mile Secrets with the best new AMEX Offers for your business!

2.   Chase Ink Cards

The Chase Ink Business Preferred is a fantastic small business credit card.

When you open the Chase Ink Business Preferred card, you’ll earn 80,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points after you spend $5,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening.  You’ll also get:

The card has a $95 annual fee.  But the sign-up bonus alone is worth $800 cash back or $1,000 in travel booked through the Chase Travel Portal.

That said, my favorite use for these points is to transfer to great partners like Hyatt for hotel stays and United Airlines for flights to Europe, Hawaii, and more, where they can be worth much more.

This card is a great option because it has strong 3X categories that apply to most freelancers:  internet and phone service, advertising purchases made with social media sites, and search engines.

If you use the Chase Ink Business Preferred for those purchases, your points can add up fast!

You’ll Earn 3X or 5X Chase Ultimate Rewards Points on Your Internet Service With the Chase Ink Cards

But if you want a straightforward cash back card, the Chase Ink Business Cash.

It earns 5X Chase Ultimate Rewards points (5% cash back) up to $25,000 total per card anniversary year on internet and phone service, cable, and purchases made at office supply stores, and has no annual fee.

And it earns 2X Chase Ultimate Rewards points (2% cash back) per $1 spent on the first $25,000 total per card anniversary year at gas stations and restaurants.

Folks who also have the Chase Sapphire Preferred, Chase Sapphire Reserve, Chase Ink Business Preferred, Chase Ink Plus or Chase Ink Bold (no longer available), can easily combine their points to transfer to airline and hotel partners, or book travel at the Chase Travel Portal.

With the Chase Sapphire Preferred, your points are worth 1.25 cents each.  And with the Chase Sapphire Reserve, your points are worth 1.5 cents each!

Both the Chase Ink Business Preferred and Chase Ink Business Cash come with access to the Chase Ink App, which helps you keep track of your expenses.

When you shop online, be sure to earn even more miles or points by clicking through a shopping portal!  It’s easy to earn lots of extra miles and points this way!

If you’re looking for a straightforward small business cash back card that earns unlimited 2% cash back on every purchases, the Capital One Spark Cash for Business is a great choice.

With this card, you’ll earn a $500 cash bonus after spending $4,500 on purchases in the first 3 months of account opening.  The $95 annual fee is waived the first year.

But it’s important to note, when you apply for this card, it pulls inquiries from all 3 credit bureaus.

Freelancers With Varied Expenses, Like Fiverr Professionals, Might Prefer the Simplicity of a 2% Cash Back Card

Most banks only pull from one bureau.  But this card is essentially like applying for 3 credit cards.  So I’d only recommend applying for it if you have good credit, don’t mind a temporary dip in your credit score, and already have any Chase cards you want.

That said, the Capital One® Spark® Cash for Business has no foreign transaction fees and NO cap on the amount of cash back you can earn.

If you have expenses in several different categories, you might like the simplicity of this card.

If you do a lot of work for Fiverr, TaskRabbit, or Postmates, this might be a great card for your expenses!

  • IBM
  • Intuit
  • Microsoft
  • Newegg

A perk of working on the internet is that you can work from anywhere!  So if you’re traveling overseas, this is a good card to bring.

5.   AMEX Starwood Small Business Card

Link:   Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express

The AMEX Starwood small business card is a great all-around credit card for earning points.  Especially because Starwood points are hard to earn!

You will earn 2X Starwood points per $1 spent at Starwood and Marriott hotels, and 1X Starwood point per $1 spent on all other purchases.

For instance, after spending $5,000 on business expenses, you’ll earn 5,000 Starwood points.  With Starwood’s Cash & Points program, those 5,000 points get you a night at great Category 4 hotels like the The Westin Puntacana Resort & Club when you add a $75 co-pay.  That’s a good deal because hotels like this normally cost $250+ a night!

Or you could transfer 5,000 Starwood points to Marriott at a 1:3 ratio, and have 15,000 Marriott points.  And stay a night at a Marriott Category 3 hotel, like the Residence Inn Charlotte University Research Park, for free!

This card is currently offering a 25,000 Starwood point sign-up bonus after meeting minimum spending requirements.  But we’ve seen it as high as 35,000 points!

Use Starwood Points for Award Stays at Hotels Like The Westin Puntacana Resort & Club, Which Costs ~$250+ a Night

Starwood points can be used for award stays at Starwood hotels and award flights when transferred to ~30 airline partners, like American Airlines.

There are lots of ways to save money on stays at Starwood hotels including Cash & Points (possibly my favorite way!) and Nights & Flights.  You can even use Starwood points for once-in-a-lifetime experiences like VIP access at a concert or sporting event with SPG Moments!

Starwood points are especially valuable because they’re versatile.  You can also read about all the great perks you get with AMEX small business cards, including AMEX Offers, and AMEX OPEN savings.

For folks who like Starwood hotels, this card is a great way to earn points towards a free stay with every purchase.  Because you’ll earn 1 Starwood point per $1 spent.

Starwood hotels include AloftElementFour PointsLe MeridienSheratonSt RegisThe Luxury CollectionWestin, Design Hotels, Tribute Portfolio, and W brand hotels.

You Can Transfer Starwood Points to American Airlines. Then Use Your American Airlines Miles to Fly First Class on Their Partner Etihad, Like I Did to Mumbai!

And if you transfer 20,000 Starwood points to airline miles, you’ll get a 5,000 mile bonus.  Find out how this is even better than most airline credit cards!

You can use this American Express card to purchase computer hardware for your freelance business, knowing that AMEX is respected for its great customer service when it comes to extending the manufacturer’s warranty.

This is also a smart card to take with you when working from other countries because it doesn’t add any foreign transaction fees.  Pay in a foreign currency and you’ll get a fair exchange rate.

Bottom Line

If you work in the digital media field, you can earn miles, points, or cash back for common business expenses, like purchases at office supply stores, on advertising, or new software and hardware, with a small business credit card.

If you think you might have a small business, find out how you might qualify.  Generally, as long as you make a profit from your work, you can get approved for a small business credit card.

Using a small business card will keep your expenses separate and easy to track.  Plus, you’ll earn rewards for making the purchases you need to help your business keep growing!
