Discount Car Rental With AutoSlash

AutoSlash is a free service that tracks your car rental reservations for price drops. They’ll automatically re-book you at a lower price if you book directly through the site.
And it can track existing reservations made with these rental companies to notify you about cheaper options:

Here’s a step-by-step guide to using AutoSlash.
Step 1. Book or Track Your Car Rental
There are 2 ways to use AutoSlash to save money on car rentals.
You can book your rental directly through AutoSlash.
After you enter your pick-up location and dates, AutoSlash will give you a list of options.
As an example, I entered a pick-up in Baltimore for a May 2017 reservation. The results show the prices for different types of cars with 10 major rental car companies.
Keep in mind, the prices on AutoSlash are just for the car plus taxes and fees. It doesn’t include extras like gas, insurance, or GPS. And it doesn’t consider additional charges for drivers under 25.
Or you can book directly through a rental car company. Then, enter your confirmation details to the “Track a Rental” tab on AutoSlash.
Step 2. Get a Cheaper Rental Rate
If you book through AutoSlash, they’ll automatically re-book you with the same rental company if there’s a price drop.
But if there are cheaper options with a different company, you’ll get an email notifying you of the details. On a sample booking, I received an email that said I could save ~$30 by switching from Sixt to E-Z.
To make a switch to a cheaper option with a different company, just reply “yes” to the email.
Step 3. Re-Book a New Reservation to Save Money
If AutoSlash is tracking an existing reservation you made with a rental car company, you’ll want to look out for an email with cheaper options.
Because you’ll have to manually book a new reservation if you go with an AutoSlash suggestion.
For example, I made a sample booking directly through the National car rental website.
After entering the details on AutoSlash to track my rental, I received an email within 30 minutes notifying me of cheaper options with savings up to ~$75. That’s great for a short-term rental!
You can click one of the money-saving AutoSlash options to book a new reservation.
And AutoSlash will monitor the price of the new reservation up until the day before pick-up to make sure you’re getting the best price!
Note: If you book a new reservation through AutoSlash, make sure to cancel your existing reservation directly with the rental car company to avoid any charges.
3 Tips When Using AutoSlash
1. AutoSlash Doesn’t Always Show Rental Car Prices Instantly
When searching for a rental car through AutoSlash, I found that you don’t always get the information right away.
For example, I searched for a week-long rental in Houston. Instead of providing a price comparison across the major car rental agencies, AutoSlash said they would email me a quote.
So if you’re looking to book a last-minute rental, AutoSlash might not be the best option. But it’s still worth checking!
2. Track Multiple Reservations
Tracking existing car rental reservations is one of the most popular features of AutoSlash.
Million Mile Secrets reader Mark likes that you can book multiple reservations directly with rental car companies and have AutoSlash track them all.
For example, if Enterprise and Hertz are your preferred car rental companies, you can book refundable reservations with both companies. Then, enter the reservation information into AutoSlash to see if you get an email with cheaper options!
3. Folks With Discount Codes Might Save More Booking Directly
AutoSlash searches the best available public car rental prices.
So if you have a special corporate or group discount code, you might save more money booking directly with the rental car company.
That said, you can still have AutoSlash search for discounts from memberships like AAA, AARP, and Costco.
Get Rental Car Insurance With These Cards
Even if you book through AutoSlash, you’ll pay at the car rental agency.
This means paying with certain credit cards can get you primary car rental insurance if you waive the rental agency’s collision damage waiver (often called CDW or LDW).
For example, you’ll get primary rental insurance with these Chase cards:
- Chase Ritz-Carlton
- Chase Sapphire Preferred
- Chase Sapphire Reserve
- United MileagePlus® Explorer Card
Small business cards like the Ink Business Cash and Ink Business Preferred offer primary rental insurance when you use the card to rent for business purposes. For personal travel, coverage is secondary (meaning you’ll have to file a claim through your own insurance first).
AMEX cardholders can pay a flat fee of ~$12 to ~$25 for primary coverage on rentals of up to 42 consecutive days. Read the terms & conditions for exclusions.
AutoSlash is a free service which tracks your car rental reservations for price drops, and automatically re-books or notifies you if there’s is a better deal.
Within 30 minutes of entering a reservation to track, AutoSlash sent me an email with an option to save ~$75 with a different car rental company.
Remember to pay for your rental with certain credit cards to get primary rental insurance.
