I’m excited to share 5 top hotels in the Caribbean and Mexico you can book with Starwood points!

Keep in mind most resort style hotels charge extra fees, even when you use points.  Unfortunately, hotel resort fees are hard to avoid.  I’ve shared my tips on what you can do about them.

I’ll let you know the fees you can expect to pay at these hotels.

1.   The St. Regis Punta Mita Resort

For a special occasion, you can use Starwood points for a luxurious stay at The St. Regis Punta Mita Resort.  The hotel is located on the Pacific coast of Mexico and is ~1 hour drive from the Puerto Vallarta airport (PVR).

Million Mile Secrets reader Bruce and team member Keith are big fans of this hotel.  Other folks seem agree because the hotel ranks #1 on TripAdvisor with more than 1,400 excellent reviews.

The resort hotel has a private beach and amazing panoramic views where you can watch the sunset.

A free night at the hotel costs 30,000 to 35,000 Starwood points per night.  You’ll also pay ~$25 nightly resort fee.  You’ll get big savings using points because nightly rates can easily cost $700+ if you pay cash.

And the experience can be well worth it.  Because the service, location, and attention to detail at The St. Regis Punta Mita can’t be found at many other hotels.

2.   The Westin Dawn Beach Resort & Spa, St. Maarten

If you’re looking for beautiful Caribbean views, you can stay at The Westin Dawn Beach Resort & Spa, St. Maarten.  Every room at the hotel has a balcony overlooking the ocean or island.

Folks on TripAdvisor like this hotel because of the friendly staff, private beach access, and proximity to the airport (~30 minute drive).

There’s something to do here for everyone in the family, including

You can also book a local ferry for a day trip to the islands of St. Barts or Anguilla.

You’ll use 12,000 to 16,000 Starwood points for an award night.  And this hotel charges a $20 resort fee and $15 service fee.  The resort fee covers:

  • Beach chair and towel service
  • Internet access
  • In-room coffee

Paying cash for a room costs between $250 and $500 per night.  So using points and paying the resort and service fees is still a good deal!

3.   The Westin Lagunamar Ocean Resort Villas & Spa Cancun

The Westin Lagunamar Ocean Resort Villas & Spa, Cancun ranks #10 on TripAdvisor among all hotels in Cancun.

Emily had a fantastic time in Mexico at nearby Playa del Carmen.

Besides luxurious rooms, this hotel has activities for anyone visiting, including couples and families.  You can go to a tequila tasting.  Or learn to speak Spanish or salsa dance.

Kids can enjoy the pool waterslide and the Westin Kids Club.

You’ll pay 20,000 Starwood points for a free night, which saves you ~$350+.  This means the limited time AMEX Starwood sign-up bonus and points from minimum spending can get you 2 free nights.

4.   Sheraton Old San Juan Hotel

The Sheraton Old San Juan is located in the heart of a city known for terrific restaurants and colorful plazas and square.

The hotel is located walking distance to the cruise port, which is convenient for folks spending in time in San Juan prior to heading out to sea.  You’re also close to top attractions like:

And San Juan is a Southwest destination.  So this might be a great choice for folks with the Companion Pass!

An award night at this hotel requires 10,000 Starwood points.  And there’s a ~$25 service fee.  Room nights regularly cost ~$200+.

5.   The Westin Grand Cayman Seven Mile Beach Resort & Spa

If you’re looking for a beach vacation full of relaxation, you might consider using Starwood points for a stay at The Westin Grand Cayman Seven Mile Beach Resort & Spa.

The hotel is located right on the famous Seven Mile Beach.  And there are lots of spa services available at the on-site Hibiscus Spa, including massages on the beach.

Folks on TripAdvisor give this hotel positive reviews because of the delicious food options, clean rooms, and sunset views.

An award night costs 20,000 Starwood points.  Using points can save you $500+ per night.

This hotel also charges a steep $60 resort fee.  But it includes perks like:

  • 2 bottles of water
  • Beach chairs, towels, and umbrellas
  • Beach yoga, aquatic yoga, beach volleyball and stand-up paddle board
  • Free parking
  • In-room coffee
  • Use of sauna, hot tub and steam room at Hibiscus Spa

If you think you’ll make use of the extra amenities, it can make sense to pay the resort fee.

Bottom Line

There are many fantastic Starwood hotels in the Caribbean and Mexico you can book using points from the limited time best-ever sign-up bonuses on the AMEX Starwood personal and small business cards.

Like the top-rated The St. Regis Punta Mita Resort, which is a Million Mile Secrets reader and team member favorite!

Or stretch your points for multiple award nights at a hotel like The Westin Grand Cayman Seven Mile Beach Resort & Spa.  But be mindful of resort fees!

What’s your favorite Starwood hotel in Mexico or the Caribbean?

Decided to book a couple days at Westin Grand Cayman to lock in NYE weekend. 12k pts per night which is going for $800+ per night for that weekend! I’d say that is quite the redemption! Wierd thing is, it is charging us $15 per night for a roll away bed but there is only two of us. I can’t seem to find where to remove those. Guess I will have to give them a call.

That is an amazing deal! I’m sure a call will take care of the roll away bed charge.

I happened to be looking at the Westin in Grand Cayman this weekend, and magically the award night rate dropped from 20k to only 12k points sometime yesterday. I locked it in quickly just in case it was an error! Seems like a huge deal since with taxes and resort fee it’s almost $700 a night.
