I like the Chase IHG card for its great benefits, like IHG Platinum elite status, and 1 free night at any IHG hotel each cardmember anniversary.  But did you know it can save you money at the gas station?

Folks who have the Chase IHG card can save 6 cents per gallon at Shell gas stations when you link your IHG account to your Fuel Rewards account!  That’s because the IHG Platinum elite status that comes with the card gets you a discount.

IHG Platinum Status, Which Is a Perk of the Chase IHG Card, Saves You 6 Cents per Gallon at Shell Stations

I’ll tell you what you need to know about this deal!

The Chase IHG Card Can Save You Money on Gas

Gasoline is a monthly expense for most folks in the US.  So it’s good news any time there’s a way to save money on gasoline.

IHG and Fuel Rewards will give you a discount of 6 cents per gallon you spend at Shell gas stations when you have IHG Platinum elite status.  Which is a perk of the Chase IHG card!  Or, you can save 5 cents per gallon as a Gold elite member.  And 7 cents per gallon when you have Spire elite status.

Here are the details:

Once Fuel Rewards has verified you are an IHG Platinum elite member, you’ll save 6 cents per gallon after you enter your member ID (phone number) at the pump.  And you do NOT need to pay with your Chase IHG card!

Is This a Good Deal?

If you regularly buy your gas at Shell, this discount is a handy perk!  Because it’s free and all you have to do is enter your phone number.

But not everybody has a Shell gas station near them.  And if you can buy gas for less at another gas station, you should obviously do that!  For example, Shell is currently selling gas for 10 cents higher than the lowest price near me.

I also really like that you do NOT need to use your Chase IHG card to get this discount.  That means you can earn the discount while still using a card that earns bonus points at gas stations, like 3X Citi ThankYou points with the Citi ThankYou Premier Card!

Why Folks Should Consider the Chase IHG Card

Even if this perk doesn’t appeal to you, there are other reasons why you should consider the Chase IHG card .  It currently comes with a sign-up bonus of 60,000 IHG Rewards points after spending $1,000 on purchases within the first 3 months of opening your account.

You’ll also get

As long as you think you’ll stay at an IHG hotel once per year, this card is worth the annual fee.  It’s one of the cards I’ve kept year and year.  You can read my full review here.

Note:   This card is NOT restricted by the Chase “5/24 rule”, so even if you’ve opened 5+ credit cards in the past 24 months, you’re still eligible for this card.

Bottom Line

If you have the Chase IHG card, you can link your IHG account to Fuel Rewards and earn 6 cents per gallon back when you fill up at Shell gas stations.  And you don’t even have to use your Chase IHG card to buy the gas!

I won't sneeze at any discount, but as some have pointed out, Shell tends to be higher. Also, at the risk of sounding like a nerd ;), I have analyzed my fuel mileage for various brands, and I found that I get poorer gas mileage from Shell than other premium and discount brands. So the cost per mile is already higher due to that. I am a Ferrari race fan and their official fuel supplier is Shell, so I would love to support a sponsor, but, while I may signup for this discount, I doubt I would use it much.

6c per $2.4 gallon yields only 2.5% discount. Citi Costco gas discount is 4%; current seasonal chase freedom and discover - 5%. Penfed Visa - 5% permanent. It is a poor deal.

I received a double postcard yesterday from IHG Rewards Club promoting Credit Card and Perks. Inside it says that IHG Rewards Club Credit Cardmember get

Executive Lounge Access. I have never seen this before and never knew. I called IHG to find out how to access Executive Lounge as it is usually a on a keyed elevator floor. I talked to an agent and a supervisor who both denied that CC Platinum Elite has Executive Lounge Access. I called Intercontinental Boston where I am staying this month to inquire; They know nothing. Any advice? Thanks Jon

Wouldn't that be called False Advertising by IHG to misguide people to apply for CC for non-existing Perks?

I got it too. There are threads about it on Reddit and FlyerTalk. The general consensus is that it was a mistake. I would bring the mailer with you and show it to the front desk when you check in though just to give it a try.

Now you only need to find a Shell that is not 20c more expensive than the random other station at the other side of the intersection.
