25,000 Points on AMEX Starwood Business Card Is Back

Update: One or more card offers in this post are no longer available. Check our Hot Deals for the latest offers.

Earlier this week, I wrote that the sign-up bonus for the Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express would likely return to 25,000 Starwood points after meeting minimum spending requirements.

The limited-time offer which included a bonus of 2 free nights in a category 1 to 5 hotel expired yesterday.  And now, as I suspected, the bonus has returned to the regular offer.  This is the same as the offer for 25,000 points on the personal card.

This is good news, because 25,000 Starwood points will potentially get you much more Big Travel than 2 free night certificates.  And AMEX business cards are quite easy to get approved for!

I’ll explain why the 25,000 point offer is a better deal for most folks!

I’m glad the Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express sign-up bonus has returned to the standard offer.

The previous offer, which included 2 free nights in a category 1 to 5 Starwood hotel after meeting minimum spending requirements, was only a better deal if you used your free nights at category 5 hotels.

Plus, because the offer was for free night certificates and NOT Starwood points, you lost the flexibility to use your points for terrific award options, including:

And you can now transfer Starwood points to Marriott at a 1:3 ratio.  So 25,000 Starwood points is worth 75,000 Marriott points!

Should You Consider the 25,000 Point Offer?

With the Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express, you’ll earn 25,000 Starwood points after spending $5,000 on purchases in the first 3 months of opening your account.

You’ll also get:

Note:   A few hotels may charge additional resort fees.

You’ll also have access to American Express OPEN discounts and AMEX Offers.  And you’ll get a subscription to ShopRunner, which offers free 2-day shipping from dozens of online stores.

Remember, applying for this card will NOT hurt your chances of being approved for Chase cards.  That’s because business cards from AMEX don’t show up on your personal credit report and so don’t count towards the 5/24 rule!

There have been offers as high as 35,000 Starwood points after meeting minimum spending requirements with this card in the past.

I’d normally advise folks to wait for a higher offer to come around again.  But because of the Marriott – Starwood merger, I’m not sure how long the AMEX Starwood cards will stick around.

Remember, you can only earn the bonus on AMEX cards once per person, per lifetime.  Note that this means ONCE for the personal card and ONCE for the business card.  But in this case it might be risky to wait, because the AMEX Starwood cards might get phased out altogether.

You can check out my series on how to earn and use Starwood points.

And remember, you can now use Starwood points to earn the Southwest Companion Pass when you transfer points to Marriott for Hotel + Air packages.

Bottom Line

The sign-up bonus on the Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express has returned to the regular offer of 25,000 Starwood points after meeting minimum spending requirements.

This is a better deal for most folks, because 25,000 Starwood points can get you lots of flexible Big Travel.

With the Marriott – Starwood merger well underway, I’m not sure how long the AMEX Starwood cards will be available.  So if you’ve been considering this card, I’d apply sooner than later.
