Planning a trip to Mexico?  I’ve got great news!

Via the Los Angeles Times, the US and Mexico have come to an agreement to lift restrictions on the number of airlines that can fly between both countries.

That’s fantastic news, because more competition usually leads to cheaper flights and better service.

New Agreement Could Create Cheaper Flights To Mexico
Expect More Flights Between the US and Mexico Very Soon!

Here’s more about this news, and what it means for you!

Expect More Flights Between the US and Mexico

There are no more restrictions to the number of flights that can fly between the US and Mexico!

That’s great news for travelers because there will be more flights between the 2 countries.  Which means more competition between airlines!  And I love competition, because it brings down prices and encourages better service. 😉

A few US airlines have already planned new flights.

Starting December 4, 2016, Southwest will fly 3 new non-stop flights from Los Angeles to Cancun, San Jose Del Cabo, and Puerto Vallarta.

Delta plans to start a new, daily, non-stop flight from New York (JFK) to Cancun, and from Los Angeles to Los Cabos, on December 17, 2016.  And a Saturday flight from Kansas City to Cancun too.

And American Airlines is adding new daily flights from Los Angeles to Cancun and Puerto Vallarta, starting December 15, 2016.

Million Mile Secrets team member Scott has taken Southwest and JetBlue flights to Cancun, and had a good experience with both.

Even Better News for Southwest and JetBlue Flights!

If you collect Southwest or JetBlue points, this is good news because cheaper flights on Southwest and JetBlue means you won’t need as many points for your ticket.  That’s because the number of points you need with these 2 airlines is directly related to the cash price of the ticket.

This is also good news for folks who collect Chase Ultimate Rewards points, because you can transfer your points to Southwest at a 1:1 ratio.

Or book your Southwest flights through the Chase Travel Portal, where your points are worth 1.5 cents each with the Chase Sapphire Reserve.  Or 1.25 cents each with the Chase Sapphire Preferred, Ink Plus (no longer available), or Ink Bold (no longer available).

Just remember, you’ll have to call Chase to book Southwest flights through their portal.  You can’t do it online.

Can’t say I’m that impressed. If there were new flights to real hubs like Mexico City or Monterrey or Guadalajara, that might actually be helpful. This seems to be only for the vacation set.

Aeromexico has had a monopoly on connecting traffic ever since Mexicana died. It’s a real pain only being able to book with SkyTeam.
